417565 2006-01-03 00:20:00 InPhase Tecchnologies (Colorado) partnered by Hitachi Maxell have announced a holographic memory system that stores data via a "light interference" technique. Apart from the massive increase in storage capacity on a disc of similar size to current DVDs (13cm across and slightly thicker), the new technology offers read/write speeds 10x faster than current DVD systems.

Discs and drives are expected to be available by the end of 2006, and the developers claim that "unlike other technologies that record and read data one bit at a time, holography allows a million bits of data to be written and read in parallel with a single flash of light."

No, the date-line is not April 1st, the source was Electronics News, December 2005, page 10.

I have summarised the article for your interest.

417566 2006-01-03 02:22:00 You mean this (pressf1.co.nz/showthread.php?t=63882)? Graham L (2)
417567 2006-01-05 10:56:00 The technology looks good, however IIRC back when C3d (Constellation 3D) first released the FMD (Flourescent Multi-layered Disc) specs, it was capable of somewhere around 450GB?! Chilling_Silence (9)

So what happened to C3d then Chill? To be honest I don't even recall ever reading about it. :(

417569 2006-01-05 20:36:00 Sounds a bit like Virtual Reality thing, best not to hold breath till it appears on market. Cicero (40)
417570 2006-01-06 12:43:00 AFAIK from my limited reading they were bought out by a very large company which has reduced a cut-down version of the disc... guess what color the origional FMD laser was! Chilling_Silence (9)
417571 2006-01-06 12:49:00 A quick Google:
www.google.com

Gives some results like this which are datestamped:
www.cdrinfo.com

And hints that it was bought out by Sony (a little speculation):
www.thocp.net

IIRC there was going to be two types of discs released. The first "basic" being 130-140GB, the second being somewhere in the 300-450GB region...

Admittedly its been a while :-/
