418196 2006-01-05 09:59:00 Which bribe are you refering to? Slingshot is not really a reputable ISP in NZ, by the way. Have you checked out any packages offered by Orcon?

Cheers :)What? Sorry, but one of my best friends was with dial-up slingshot for years till her work paid for her to get xtra broadband (not her choice of ISP). I have known many who have stuck with slingshot for years with no real problems reported.

They fact they havn't changed ISPs shows that the service can't be that bad. These people wouldn't put up with a ISP that didn't offer value for coin.

As far as i know Slingshot still enjoy an excellant reputation amoungst their users, but lack the big marketing drive that makes them "reputable"

Personally i'd rather trust a referal from a slingshot user than a TV ad any day.

Well you would be wrong, some ISP traffic shape, others don't. Some ISP' have better help desks than others and there is debating that as I have dealt with dozens of ISP help desks over the years. And then there is quality of the service itself, Orcon for example were abysmal (probably Telecoms fault) in the early days of Bitstream with high pings slow speeds and connection stability issues (ok now).

You don't think Orcon had "we will give you a crappy bitstream connection" in there contract when bitstream first came out?

418199 2006-01-06 10:20:00 Thanks alot for the info. I'm now free from the shackels of my xtra contract and have been checking out whats on offer. slingshot have 3 months free plus no connection fee which is quite good. Orcon is good if i plan to use 10GB but not real good value for 1to 2 which is what i usually use. Ihug does sound the go but want a connection fee , although a sales rep has told me to watch out for a promotion coming out in the next couple of weeks. One thing I'm sure of though is giving xtra the boot. Who ever is in charge of making up their broadband plans has been on holiday for at least a year or so .They suck compared to what just about everybody else is offering.
Bye bye xtra.

418200 2006-01-27 22:16:00 Some ISP' have better help desks than others

So can anyone tell me what they think of Slingshot's helpdesk please? I'm thinking of changing to them as well.

Thanks

418201 2006-01-28 01:22:00 Convinced my olds to join up with slingshot broadband a couple of weeks ago, they had a good deal with the free connection and 3 months free, as well as a half price modem, and also a reasonably cheap monthly plan.
Their help desk is pretty good, once you get through to someone. The menus are massive, you have to push about 5 buttons before you talk to someone. But the people do know what they are talking about.

418202 2006-01-28 01:41:00 I have used Slingshot dialup for about 4 years now and they definitely provide better service than they used to. With regard to broadband, Telecom suck! We have been waiting for a few years to be able to access broadband and they just wouldn't do it, finally they are doing it but it is taking forever, and we are only 10mins from Henderson (West Auckland) so not in the wops or anything. I will definitely be staying with Slingshot for broadband once it is available.

With regard to Slingshots helpdesk, although sometimes you can wait a while (but that seems to be the same with any helpdesk) they are helpful and helped me fix my connection problem quickly.

418203 2006-01-28 04:11:00 I would not recommend going with Slingshot personally. Initially I was drawn to their cheaper deals... but the connection speeds were often unreliable, and recently after a few months the connection just randomly stopped. I rang their helpline to ask why, and the assistant i got (her name was Rosita by the way) literally screamed at the top of her voice at me, saying "I DON'T KNOW ITS YOUR PROBLEM AND YOU HAVE TO SORT IT OUT YOURSELF" and then hung up on me. RUde Bi*ch.
Though i called up again and got a more helpful person... the fact that they hire people who shout at customers because they can't be bothered helping them is absolutely ridiculous. So i think i'll change to xtra or paradise or somehwere...

418204 2006-01-28 04:30:00 I can't understand what people mean by "service" from their ISP.
As I see it you pay your money and away you go. I haven't been in contact with Ihug since the day I signed up. No problems with my connection, so what "service " are you talking about.
If it's about setting up connection etc. That's not the ISP's fault. It's yours.

I've been with about a dozen ISP's over the years. When the SPAM got overpowering I switched ISP. Now they do a good job of filtering and virus scanning there's no need to change.

My advice is pick an ISP that offers free connection and modem (if you need one). Once you are connected, who cares what your ISP's name is.
