683114 2008-06-27 22:41:00 No probs

It sounds like a virus, if there's no password and she cant get in. And safe mode and last known good config do nothing.

And yup youre right. I would (once you can get into it), install Avast Home which is free. And probably better than CA.

Are you / is she in NZ or somewhere else??

The easiest way (most probably) is to see if the hard drive can come out and do what I posted previously. Install it on a desktop and scan it.

The only other thing is to restore it, which will probably wipe everything on it, and whatever it is on now, will have to be re-done.

683115 2008-06-27 22:47:00 Both in NZ. Me Wanganui, she Whakatane. I got Spyware in mine last week and had to get the hard drive reformatted and start again. But...all my files were backed up on a server so no problem. Hers is stand alone and she works in Educational IT for a job so it is serious not being able to get on at all or access her files. Her whole life is on there. because they are not ours they are leased.
We cannot open these machines up at all they have to go back to Wellington. we can get teckies to play with the software but not the hardware.
My son is an educational network engineer so when he wakes up for day I will call him for help.
Thanks for your help I am impressed with this forum and will use it again.

683116 2008-06-27 22:52:00 Giving up already ??:groan: Theres several things that can be tried if a person has the time and a working internet connection so they can download programs/fixes - Try this - start the laptop and hit F8 Again - this time select Safe mode With command prompt, and run system system restore back to yesterday or the day before, see if that will let the laptop start then it can be sorted as to any viruses/spyware.

Run System Restore in Command Prompt

1. Boot into Safe mode with Command Prompt – Keep Pressing F8 at start-up then with the arrow keys select Safe mode with Command prompt.

2. At the command prompt, type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Press Enter.

Follow the instructions given to perform the System Restore process.

683118 2008-06-27 23:25:00 I am now talking to my friend on a landline so things are easier to relay. So I am back.
She has got into safe mode with command prompt but there is no option to write anything. She can chose her operating system or push enter or F8 to go back...Help

683119 2008-06-27 23:30:00 So it doesnt come up with c:\documents and settings/username either ?

If it does type what wainuitech posted

683120 2008-06-27 23:33:00 IF you can get into safemode with command prompt, what you should get is select Safe mode with command prompt - your operating system should be highlighted -press enter -you will see all the drivers flashing by, it will more than likely stop at one ending in MUP ( for a few seconds) - you should get the welcome screen , select your name - you will then get a black box titled CMD.exe - there should be C:\Documents and Settings\users Name\ _ at the flashing curser type in C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe ( press enter)

If that doesn't work do you have a XP CD ?

683121 2008-06-27 23:42:00 Hi Guys
She did everything you said and when it got to the welcome screen she could chose her name or administrator. Didn't matter which one she chose, it just flicked briefly to a black screen with writing at the top but didn't stop there but went straight back to the welcome screen and if she clicks on the name again the same thing happens really fast

683122 2008-06-28 00:00:00 Sounds like the user profiles could be damaged slightly - just writing out something that will allow system restore to be run ( hopefully) but it needs a program downlaoded on a working PC. BRB wainuitech (129)
683123 2008-06-28 00:09:00 The only thing that she can think of that she did differently yesterday was updated and ran ad aware and spy bot and followed the instructions to remove rogue files etc at the end. Could that have done it as she closed down last night after doing that and couldn't boot up this morning. marydean (13905)
