| 418580 | 2006-01-04 18:31:00 | a c/p from deep into a mailing I get from "Good Morning, Silicon Valley": "THIS MESSAGE IS IN ALL CAPS TO APPEAR MORE THREATENING (note from me: This is a true representation of the whole c/p . . I did NOT cap that headline! I might have colored a few lines for impact however!) Grokster's working hard to clean up its rep and go straight as a legal music service, but it's hard to imagine who it thinks it's impressing with its latest window dressing -- the luddites at the RIAA or the most clueless of Net newbies . Grokster's site has begun displaying the IP addresses of those who visit it, along with the following threat: YOUR IP ADDRESS HAS BEEN LOGGED . Don't think you can't get caught . You are not anonymous . Of course the irony of this is that most servers log IP addresses, a fact that seems to have escaped whoever dreamt up this little bit of FUD but not the tech community, which is having great fun logging in famous IP addresses at the site . "They can log my ip all they want, as can anyone else on the internet," wrote one Digg . com poster . "Idiots . " " Good Morning Silicon Valley is written and edited with the able assistance of John Murrell . (me here:) . . . . . . Does anyone actually believe this will scare file-sharers away? ;) Comments? |

| 418581 | 2006-01-04 19:01:00 | Possibly. Depending where you live. Seeing as there has been a couple of cases of prosecution for music downloading already. | pctek (84) | ||
| 418582 | 2006-01-04 21:55:00 | Thats just a load of baloney! I recall a website where you could make one of those "threatening" messages a couple of years ago. All you needed was an email address to send to, the name of the program and the type of text to send. |

| 418584 | 2006-01-04 23:30:00 | Yawn . This is old news, it's been done before, no one cares . ninja: you forget so easily . . . were you not young and impressionable at one time too? There's a whole new batch of very sharp kiddies who are cutting their teeth on things like the internet for the first time who might see that sorta thing and get all nervous and worried . This site is cruised by people who are afraid to post or even log on, and yet they are here reading this material . . . many thousands of them . . . and isn't it nice to have this bully-pulpit to spread knowledge? It's wonderful to have this info in old files in our heads, but every generation has to re-invent the wheel over and over again . I appeal to your sense of fairness and the willingness to not hoard such a wellspring of information that people like you and I have . . . let it out and maybe the newbees won't have to invent fire all over again too . Because we went thru the school of hard knocks and survived, it should make us a little more commiserate to the barbs and hooks of life . Right? ;) |
