684157 2008-07-01 03:07:00 Laptop (Acer 9503) with mat****a dvd drive. Can write fine to both DVD-RW and CD-RW but not DVD-R or CD-R. Get error 1014 with suggestions of cleaning disk, try a new one etc. Have tried with differnt brands with same result.

Same error if using XP Pro bulit in software or NTI CD/DVD Maker.

Spent enough time on this so now backing up user data to format and reinstall. This will at least confirm if it is a software or hardware issue.

Any ideas before I format?

684158 2008-07-01 04:33:00 Don't worry. have formatted and still have problem. Hardware fault now. berryb (99)
684159 2008-07-01 04:42:00 Just found on a site - person with the same problem -
Try this if using XP right click drive icon in my computer>properties>recorder (tab) and make sure box 'Enable CD recording on this Drive' is NOT checked.
This worked for CD-R problems for me. Just looked and it bypasses the drag/drop to the CD.

Yes found that site and tried it but no luck.

Thanks all for the comments

Will tell the customer to use -/+RW from now on and a flash drive!

684163 2008-07-01 10:46:00 Can write fine to both DVD-RW and CD-RW but not DVD-R or CD-R. Its odd - its usually the other way around, RW's are usually more unreliable. wainuitech (129)
684164 2008-07-01 15:45:00 Isn't there a power difference in RW as opposed to normal -R or +R discs?

I have always felt that writing to a RW required more laser to get thru the layers or excite the molecules . RWs are a little freaky to use if the voltage is too low .

My son turns up the voltage on the laser in automotive cd players to get them to read a RW . . so maybe there's an answer there . I dunnow fer sure .
