683603 2008-06-29 11:30:00 You lot are so helpful, so once again I thank you!:thanks

My laptop and computer seem to be having too many problems at the moment. But *touch-wood* I think my PC is coping just fine thanks to you guys!

Yesterday I posted a problem I was having with my Internet connection on my laptop. I don't know if you've seen it, but I seem to have just inserted a wireless disc I got from the package and it all started working. Note that this program was not installed on the laptop when I was given it - it was my Mum's friends that she didn't want, and sadly she passed away over a year ago now so it would mean a lot if you could get this fixed for her. Its not terribly important since she doesn't use it often, and I'm thinking of purchasing a new laptop.

Okay so moving on, the laptop seems to be having problems with staying on for longer than 15-20 mins maximum. The screen would just flick off, and so I've been struggling to find the time to find the cause. I believe it to be due to the low specs or my fans having issues. Its crashed too many times and I fear its damaged bits in the system32, I've even used an eTrust anti virus program and checked the file system manually finding a few infected files- about 10 or so. I don't know if you know how this program works or recommend it, but its one of my limited options because I've been having a hard time getting and downloading the other anti virus programs for the net due to it switching off. Now, note that the longer I wait before I reboot the more it seems to be able to do. For example when I reboot as soon as it turns itself off, the comp would come on but the screen wouldn't. Now if I were to wait a few minutes, it would go further, and then 10 minutes, even further. This is due to the fans not being able to cope? I've attempted the BIOS but I can't seem to find a place to turn the fan speed down.

The problem with the system32 is that the files seem to be the likes of SAM.log, security log and a few others. I've attempted to right-click and ''cure'' it, but after another scan, its still there. Nor do I think deleting it would help me at all but cause more problems.
I've had the likes of files being missing or corrupted, please insert the file and reboot, on the boot. One of those was hal.dll a file in the system32, and one that appeared back on my next boot-up since I checked my WINDOWS, so I'm guessing it was just a luck or a fluke.

So that seems to be the gist of my problem and here is the system specs I have jotted down:

Mesh
Mobile AMD Sempron (tm)
Processor 3000+
1.8GHz, 448MB of RAM - I know its very low...
Physical Address Extension
Windows XP
SP2

Device Manager - no conflicts

I have my Windows XP disc, so I could do a fresh install. But I fear it not being any virus or damaged files at all but the fans struggling to do anything positive. Also I'd like to mention that having it just working through the inbuilt batteries causes it to crash more. A power source seems to make it work better. And lastly, having it on my lap or it tilted is also crash-worthy - I always use it on a wooden table.

683604 2008-06-29 19:28:00 Can you remove the bottom cover and clean the fans out I often do that with one of mine gary67 (56)
683605 2008-06-30 11:46:00 I'm going to try that next, I do do it with my PC after all.

I've tried putting it in another socket to see if it was the power source, but after I thought that it really was going to work fine, it typically crashed after about 10 minutes on the desktop. And like I've said once it switches the monitor off, I have to wait a few minutes otherwise a blank screen would just come on.

The fans are spinning as well.

This is the connector I'm using to get the power:

EDACPOWER ELE
MODEL: EA10953
AC INPUT: 100-240V
AC OUTPUT: 18-24V

I have 2 fans yes, one large and one very small, so I'm guessing the output is the small one? That seems to be a bit dusty but I've attempted a hoover and a pin to clean what I can see from outside, though nothing changed much performance-wise. It could well be inside, so that and me putting Avast and a Hijack This program on a disc and seeing if I have any errors, are to be my last attempts. Because if that don't work, then I have no idea what will except get some professional to check and pay big money.

683606 2008-07-02 20:33:00 Please lock this now, I had someone around my home with a diagnostic kit to check for faults. Its my motherboard gfx card thats the problem, and I was thinking about getting a new one like I've said. Its a shame that this repair would cost just too much, though. JOEJG (10295)
