Telecom and TelstraClear sign multi-million-dollar agreement, ending commercial squabbling between the two companies

13 January 2006

Telecom and TelstraClear have signed a multi-million-dollar agreement, laying to rest all the commercial squabbling between the two telecommunications companies.

The deal includes interconnection prices, access to broadband, and wholesaling of services such as residential landlines.

It also involves Telecom making a one-off $17.5-million payment to TelstraClear as settlement for a range of long-standing issues.

Telecom says that backdates the deal to the time TelstraClear first raised the various issues, and serves as compensation for taking some time to reach agreement.

TelstraClear says the deal is an achievement.

Since the squabbling between TelstraClear & Telecom is over, which company is now going to do the squabbling? Ihug? Orcon? Slingshot?

Will TelstraClear be happy with this? Or will they be squabbling again in 5 – 12 months time?

420751 2006-01-13 11:47:00 What do we get out of it?

You get to help pay for the $17.5 million settlement, as it will be factored into Telecom costs, which in turn are paid for from revenue, which comes from customer charges. There is no "money tree" to pick from, only pockets.

Telstra will of course be able to return the money to Australia .....

Gives you a nice warm feeling?

Why did they bother in the first place?

420753 2006-01-13 19:53:00 If they're losing the data caps, I could live with 2m/bit ;)

Hell, come to think if it I'd rather go back to flat-rate 256kbps :(

420754 2006-01-13 19:54:00 So Telstra will be offering 3584 kilobits at a cheap price to customers? Watch it not happen.
They're all dogs fighting over the same bone.

420755 2006-01-13 23:29:00 TelstraClear has said that 'the main change' to consumers will be that Telstra will be able to offer 'broadband' throughout NZ... in other words the consumer won't get a hell of a lot else.

I just wonder if Telstra will use the 17 million 'windfall' to heavily subsidise new connections... on second thoughts nah I don't think so, it'll be scooting off to Oz as we speak.
