2006-01-11 01:11:00 | Just heard this news on Newstalkzb that telecom will increase line rental charges from $39.85 to $42.20 per month in March. Due to inflation (of course) ! | Bazza (407) | |

2006-01-11 02:48:00 | It's not that bad, considering TelstraClear are $44.85 for exactly the same thing + $2.25 wiring maintenance per month. | pixeldust (6619) | |
2006-01-11 02:51:00 | Ah that sucks. I only really use my phone line for ADSL. If they offered "naked" ADSL, I'd ring up Telecom and say "No phone services!".... | gibler (49) | |
2006-01-11 03:20:00 | Come on people, of course they are going to screw Joe Public for the money... especially when the thumbscrews are being tightened by ComCom over broadband and T/com see their revenue stream from there dwindling. It's business as usual at our favourite telco and if I remember correctly the 'Kiwi share' allows them to put prices up in line with inflation... of course by doing that they are contributing to inflation! | Shortcircuit (1666) | |
2006-01-11 03:24:00 | Ah that sucks. I only really use my phone line for ADSL. If they offered "naked" ADSL, I'd ring up Telecom and say "No phone services!".... Yes. I would too. However I do think the increase is line with inflation so I have no problem with this. Waits for Hamstar to pop in. :-) Why do we not get griping about petrol prices here? Talk about a monopoly. Surely we don't import refined oil and it is mostly refined at Marsden Point (I think). All resellers of petrol have a look at the price down the road and match it. IMHO the retail price has little to do with actual cost of supply. Then think about electricity costs. It is mostly a monolopy. If you have a bach at the beach or whatever you pay line charges all year whether you use it or not. Think about mortgages. Now this one really has me stumped. If I want a house worth on the market $100,000 and I have $50,000 and want to borrow another $50,000 and excluding lawyers costs, inspection fees and et al. Let us say that I have all money for incidental costs so I want $50,000 from the bank. The bank says O.K. you can have the $50,000. I pay $50,000 plus other costs and the bank pays the owner of the house I purchase another $50,000. So this means that the bank and I each pay $50,000. The bank knows exactly how much they have to pay in interest at the time of purchase to get the money to give to the seller of the house. The seller of the house goes away on settlement date quite happy presumably with the $100,000 and the bank knows they have put in $50,000 in this transaction. To my way of thinking this is no different to the car salesman who sells you a $50,000 car and you pay cash. Next week the salesman rings and says that car prices have just gone up and you need to pay us some more.

I imagine there would be a big rush to DSL as well. With regard to banks and mortgage interest: You are basically paying for the use of other people's money. The bank is really just the middle-man between the depositors and the borrowers - and like all "good" middle-men they take a nice little cut for themselves. ;) Next time you want to borrow $50K, ask your neighbour and see if they'll let you borrow it for nothing!! |
