Could some expert out there throw some light on this.

Both NiCd and NiMH are very good. They both like being used: being fully charged, then fully discharged. Neither will last long if they are kept on trickle charge.

If you need to discharge a secondary cell find the discharge voltage, and wind a variable power supply to that voltage then connect the battery to the power supply then when the battery voltage reaches the power supply volts it will stop discharging, so you can not over discharge it.
