That's where the poetry in sports comes in. | Greg (193) | ||

Having said that, there's a lot of women in the world who love the game from a competitive perspective (ie not just cos of the men in shorts!). My missus and I go nuts with enthusiasm whenever the AB's play. But ah well... different strokes for different folks. Eg, I can never understand the appeal of track athletics... they seem utterly pointless to me, but those sports have enormous popularity. Very well said Greg. When I was going to college 60 years ago it was compulsory to play rugby. No excuses , other than a doctor's letter, would get you out of it. Soccer was a dirty word and League was not even mentioned. The school played rugby in winter and cricket in summer. And that meant EVERYONE played. Consequently I have not attended a rugby match since the day I left school. I detest the game. Funnily though I love cricket. Perhaps it's because I was a much better cricketer than a rugby player. |

That fact that his chosen feild just happens to be our national sport is just icing on the cake. His talent, skill, Leadership and dare i say Mana is in no way affected by the fact that Saffron Panty boy and his like minded freinds in Melbourne don't recorgnise a man who deserves all the respect he gets. Go the Blacks. |

His reasons for retiring epitomises the man and I doubt the timing has anything remotely to do with the wishes of commercial side of the NZRFU. As a sports lover, and a fan of rugby in particular, it nonplusses me that people, albeit probably non-rugby lovers, can be so puerile, snide and even bitter in the face of success(es) that sportpeople achieve in their chosen sport. The only explanation I can come up with is, that you (yeah you, don't deny it) must be sad ©~%+$ of the highest order. Met's from my perspective, your post was worth the 24 hour ban, not that I think you earned it at all. |

| 419559 | 2006-01-11 04:54:00 | Melta, I just gotta ask, who is "Saffron Panty boy"?Don't ask. People's passions and defence of their sport is already running high in this thread, and there is no need to resort to personal insults. Anymore of it, and the thread will be closed. | Jen (38) | ||
| 419560 | 2006-01-11 05:35:00 | Well if you think that rugby is a minority sport and the retirement of the captain is a small deal, have a think about the $500,000 pay packet he has given up( and thats more then the PM). Tana is not only a rugby man, but also a very approachanle one as well. | plod (107) | ||

As far as spectator sport goes, I agree with you that atheletics can't hold a candle to Rugby & similar team sports. |

| 419563 | 2006-01-11 06:38:00 | You must be thinking of Rugby League. That's the beauty of the game, you pick up the ball and 15 people want to squash you. Which of course is why I play Golf. Pick up the ball and take a penalty. Hit the ball out of bounds and take a penalty. What I do with my own golf ball is my business plus the match committee. Never been tackled playing golf yet. |
