It is not like him to post such a stupid dumb question that nobody can understand.
And they are actually having a conference in the US about this subject, must be very satisfying solving the important issues in the world.
And it's not like you to be so overtly critical, seems we all have off days.

It is not like him to post such a stupid dumb question that nobody can understand. It is Billy, so you can quit the snide remarks. As Cicero says, you must be having an off day yourself what with over half your posts today spent on making remarks about Billy and his threads. It is a nice day, go outside and enjoy some fresh air. :)

419115 2006-01-08 03:57:00 Let me explain further: The words "machine" and "instrument" can mean different levels of technology to different people. To some people, "machine" may mean a tractor or a lawnmower, something mechanical and not highly sophisticated. To them perhaps, the word "instrument" may convey an image of higher technology and precision. Others may think the opposite, and some may see them as synonymous.

Although my interest has a bio-medical/legal foundation, you can interpret the circumstances to suit yourself, it will not affect the validity of the poll results because it is your perceptions and emotive responses that matter. I can't cover all of the options in this simple poll, which is why I have cut it to the bare essentials.

It is a singular choice, in that regardless of the environment or circumstances you envisage, the decision comes down to a preference for one of two "devices" developed and manufactured by man.

Don't read too much into this, just cut to the chase and make a gut-reaction choice. If your life or liberty were at stake, and something man-made could save you, would you have more faith in something labelled an "XYZ instrument" or something labelled an "XYZ machine".

Please vote one way or the other, I can't think of a better forum to get a full spread of ages, backgrounds and life experiences.

Cheers

Edit: And for Safari & ninja, the results would constitute one bulletpoint illustrating a single concept during a two hour presentation, illustrating one tiny aspect of the topic. It is no big deal so there's no need to wind up the sarcasm machine, just pick an option and vote.

in that context i would rather have a spade called a spade. ie i'd rather be connected to a heat machine rather than a heart instrument.

Thanks for the warning Greg .

Thankfully this is a little more down to earth than CB's offerings, though I did expect to cop a little bit of flak .

It is very simple really, a matter of which terminology inspires most trust and/or confidence . You could argue that it is purely semantics, but people do make judgements based on their personal values and that is very relevant to my interest .

Votes are a bit slow coming in but the results are interesting .

419120 2006-01-08 09:15:00 Oh dear oh dear . :horrified

Billy plainly means trumpets, saxaphones, violins etc versus Moog synthesizers, sampling computers, drum machines etc .

Well if it's good enough for JS Bach, Dr Who, and the Beatles then ALL HAIL THE MACHINE . :D

Perhaps it would have made a big difference if that was made clear in my opinion, as it was less that clear that it was a matter of a name (terminology) and not a function that was being voted on.

It has certainly clarified the poll and the purpose, perhaps a little late though.
