will the memtest built into GRUB do fine?
So i will:
1. do a mem test
2. pop out any unnecessary cards - rety setup
3. Disable various hardware in the BIOS - retry the setup

may try a different cdrom too

thanks for the suggestions, I'll do these tonight and let you know how we get on

Excellent.

Do the GRUB test and the one on the UBCD.

684450 2008-07-02 05:16:00 Is the disk SATA? Have you enable native support in BIOS? Maybe you'll have to play with the settings: Enable or disable native support. If it is SATA, most likely it will ask to press F6 georgeks (9122)
684451 2008-07-02 08:50:00 is it anything like this (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) error?

I fixed mine by tirning off PCI in the bios prior to installing took me 2 hours to work it out though and a bios update

684452 2008-07-04 05:54:00 I know this thread is a few days old, but I just thought I'd mention that the age of the computer may be a factor.

Is pretty new? I know a couple of IT stores that won't install XP on newer computers because the comps have new hardware that only has Vista drivers available. Maybe this is the problem?

684453 2008-07-04 06:00:00 I havn't had time to try those things I'm gonna try but will definitely try them next week. The pc isn't REALLY new, was purchased last year, and considering its only a 1.8Ghz ? Vista didn't run too well on it. mOOseCaNNoN (13319)
