683839 2008-06-30 06:58:00 I have to agree with dugimodo - you want simultaneous access to the shared drive, not switching it manually via a USB sharing device. Get a NAS device - some are coming out with 10/100/1000 ethernet now - ideal if your LAN supports it.

What if your device hasnt got a lan at all though? Can I still use a network attached storage device withoug it? With 2 essentially "dumb" devices?

683840 2008-06-30 07:41:00 I have a USB Cable I got a few years back it is USB to USB to link two laptops. I think it goes by the name of USB Laplink cable I think, it is a special cable. It comes with a CD of software. Bantu (52)

Um, yeah. I used to have one also. It was connecting 2 computers together and directly passing information from one to the next. Are you saying perhaps that might be what I am after? 2 of them?

683842 2008-07-01 05:42:00 sorry I don't think I understood what you're trying to do. It seems there's no pc or network involved ? I didn't realise there were satellite receivers capable of recording onto a usb hdd ?? but at any rate I don't believe it would be possible to share a usb device with two other devices at the same time, the switch would seem to be the only option. If you can add a pc into the picture and connect everything to it it might be a different story, it might be possible for one usb device to acess another that way - my mediagate could play files off a usb drive plugged into a pc on the network if I shared it but we're back to ethernet again :lol dugimodo (138)

Yeah, if you look on TM for PVR's you will see there are some Satellite receivers that can record directly to usb HDD and I also have a media player with a usb hdd and wanted to share the drive without a pc at all.
I still do not know if it is technically possible to access the hdd by 2 devices at once if they are accessing different partitions.
