| 420004 | 2006-01-11 04:11:00 | It's not that bad, considering TelstraClear are $44.85 for exactly the same thing + $2.25 wiring maintenance per month. That would include Telecoms' cut, I guess, as my rental via Saturn/Telstra cable is $31.95. Pity it's not avialable more widely. |

| 420005 | 2006-01-11 04:21:00 | Just heard this news on Newstalkzb that telecom will increase line rental charges from $39.85 to $42.20 per month in March. Due to inflation (of course) ! Barstards |

I pay $9.95 for my phone number, and $60 for internet. I could get the net cheaper I guess, but I have somewhat of a need for speed. -Qyiet |

| 420009 | 2006-01-11 07:43:00 | I bet all of those moaning about the line rental increase would moan even more if Telecom decided to reduce the line rental and charged on a per-call basis. I imagine there would be a big rush to DSL as well. With regard to banks and mortgage interest: You are basically paying for the use of other people's money. The bank is really just the middle-man between the depositors and the borrowers - and like all "good" middle-men they take a nice little cut for themselves. pressf1.pcworld.co.nz Next time you want to borrow $50K, ask your neighbour and see if they'll let you borrow it for nothing!! Quite happy to pay the interest rate. My point is that the bank gives the money to the seller of the property when you draw down the loan. They know the cost at that time. I have no problem with the bank cut but why does a rate go up when the cash has already been paid by the bank? |

| 420011 | 2006-01-11 08:41:00 | Have a look at this article: business.timesonline.co.uk British Telecom have also recently raised their line rental prices (which are a considerably cheaper than here, incidently) and have had alot of criticism for it. The price rises have been labelled as a "tax on broadband". This is all despite competitors actually dropping their prices (ie. the overall trend is for line rentals to get cheaper). Customers are being urged to switch suppliers. If only we had such luxury. |

Telecom has little people running around in cars fixing your phone lines etc. These cars don't run off thin air (or devil-juice as some of you telescummers would like to think). If the petrol price rises, they won't continue to absorb these costs. I'm not saying they can't, they probably can, but it doesn't make economic sense. Its all relative anyway considering most peoples wages adjust for inflation, at least eventually. My calculations put the change in price at around 5.85%. Inflation may now only be around 3% but I don't know the last time they changed the price, which could account for the difference. I just glanced over the telescum website and am quite amused. Prices at the supermarket may rise, but 'telescum' has to pay higher wages to cover these higher prices. |
