684388 2008-07-01 21:26:00 Hi Team

I need to advise an American colleague about the use of file compression programs, and being a good 'ol US-type techno-dunce, he is as thick as two short planks (I hope that allusion is obscure enough not to offend SJ, who is a honorary Kiwi anyway and should therefore forgive us our trespasses).

I use WinZip, but know from experience that he will never get past first base with that, so I'm looking for something suitable for a techno-tyro to use with a reasonable chance of success, given a fine day and a following wind.

Is there anything out there, free or paid, that will walk a novice through the process? He will need to both zip and unzip files.

Cheers

A free one I use always is IZarc (http://www.izarc.org/), works basically the same as winzip, and its free.

To zip files the easy way ( almost idiot proof) select the files, right click/Send to/ Compressed File Path (www.imagef1.net.nz) - to decompress ( almost idiot proof) you can try Extract Now (http://www.extractnow.com/) you simply open the program, drag the zipped file to it, and hit the extract button. It unzips the files to a folder ( same name as file) to the same location as the zipped file. In the settings you can set it to extract to a certain folder if you wish.

684390 2008-07-01 21:45:00 Winzip or Winrar is as good as any. He just needs to spend some time with them and learn them.

I did a tutorial for winzip with screen dumps years ago which Niko Mac hosted on their website for a few years, but as the program advanced they did their own one.

684392 2008-07-01 22:03:00 Winrar. Right click and select add to archive xxx.rar. pctek (84)
684393 2008-07-01 22:15:00 Winrar. Right click and select add to archive xxx.rar.

Yep - nothing is 1D10T proof - I think Winrar or Izarc would be the two closest to being 1D10 proof.

684394 2008-07-01 22:23:00 Under windows XP the inbuilt compressed folders is about as simple as you'll find, it's not as fully featured or functional as the other programs but it works, is relatively simple, and makes .zip files. Vista also has this but some people report problems with vista being incredibly slow using it dugimodo (138)
684395 2008-07-01 22:24:00 XP.....ctrl - right click to select multiple files in windows explorer (desktop, or wherever) & send to - compressed zip folder...done! fnphoto (2434)
