420478 2006-01-12 17:12:00 Hi Guys

This applies to all nokia models.

Some of new might travel to other places such as hong kong and are unsure if the mobile you are actually are new.

If you are planning to buy any nokia mobiles in the future here are some ways to check

First while the mobile is on type in *#06#

This will then show you your Imei number.Note it down. After that open the back over of your mobile and lift the battery up and check if the imei number matches the one displayed on your mobile.

Then Check the box of the mobile. There should be a sticker stating IMEI number.

Lastly there's a thing call life timer with the nokia mobile telling you how long your mobile has been used for.

While yor mobile is on type in *#92702689#

This will show you the life timer, the manufacture date,Repaired date, serial number and purchasing date

With my nokia N70 it only showed life timer.Guess every mobile is different

The life timer format should be 0000:00

My one shows 000014:20 which means I've used the mobile for 14 hours and 20 minutes

if the number shows 000.. all the way its safe to buy.

Hope this thread helps .

Maybe this will help other people in the future

Cheers

420480 2006-01-12 17:54:00 So are you saying that a retailer will allow you to open a brand new phone and start using these codes BEFORE you buy?

Cant see that happening somehow .

420481 2006-01-13 10:21:00 Right here in hong kong if you are going to buy you should ask for official stock. They will hand the model you wish to you but just to be safe i would suggest you to use the following codes to check if the mobie is actually new Ninjabear (2948)
420482 2006-01-13 11:41:00 That means the phone has been unpacked (box shrink wrap removed, box seal broken, battery charged) at the time they hand it over.

Yea, right.

The point being that its NOT a new phone by the time you have the phone to the point you can interrogate it in that manner. - So then buy the one still in the shrink wrapped box that is new.

All those codes are public information, readily available on the web, have been for years for each phone model. The codes can also be reset/reprogrammed if you have the right equipment and are dishonest.

Can't see the point in this "information" apart from indicating that one should not buy a phone from a dealer in HK?

Not pointing out not to buy from a hk dealer.just that some dealers are like that

There are even people who take parts out of other mobiles say a nokia 6260 and then use the parts out and use it on another nokia 6260.

Buying one that is shrinked wrap still isnt secure.I have seen a modified mobile shrinked wrap looked brand new.

I guess the only way is to look at the warranty label on the back cover of the mobile

420484 2006-01-13 11:58:00 I'll stick to the Vodafone shop down Wanganui's mainstreet. Metla (12)
420485 2006-01-13 12:22:00 I'm with you Metla .

I think the clear point made by ninjabear is that one should't ever consider buying a phone from Hong Kong, that is well demonstrated above?

Not sure that was the intention but that is the outcome . Works for me .

Support the NZ businesses, I say .
They pay taxes here .

420486 2006-01-13 18:50:00 Interesting, I just checked my life timer and it says 7:35 so I take thats how long I have talked for?
All this proves is that the wife was right when she told me I didn't need a new phone 3 years ago :o
