| 685097 | 2008-07-03 23:03:00 | For some time I used CDs for my final backups. It didn't take me long to discover that XP would format my CDs so that they could be read to and from with explorer rather than having to use Nero or similar. XP also formatted the CDs in a few seconds - much quicker than using the other programs. Now I use DVDs but have found no way in which they can be formatted to be able to do the same thing. But I have a note in my self written instructions saying to use XP so I must have done it at some time. Is there any method or do I have to always use NERO. I prefer Total Commander for file shifting etc. Tom |

| 685099 | 2008-07-04 00:44:00 | I wouldn't suggest using this type of filesystem (udf?) for your final backups. I've lost data on my backups because the version of the udf packet writing software changed. Using a standard burning program is safer; while less convenient, gives you far safer control. |

I am not trying it either. Guess I am back to Nero and even worse having a look at InCd - gosh this gave me problems in an earlier version. I knew that. With CDs I found the RW disks were just a minefield. I did stick with CD-R for what I needed. But with DVD I much prefer using RW disks. According to my own personal notes some time ago, I was arranging things so that the disks could be written to by any program. But I foolishly didn't make any notes on how to do it. I have forgotten the method I used. I have a built in dislike of NERO. I am even more puzzled by what Trev says. I think we must be on different planets - or he always uses DVD-R disks. Or his computer is better than mine. (Not difficult) Just to be sure I have just put one of my DVD RW disks into the computer which has completely ignored its presence. Mind you if I use the same disks in my SONY DVD burner for the TV it formats the disk immediately without me doing anything. Is this how your computer is set up TREV.? Tom |
