684933 2008-07-03 09:06:00 I am after a network tool to check networking ports etc to test for firewall blocking network access. Can anyone recommend a good one for xp?

In the last two weeks I have struck two real odd software issues.

1:
McAfee was allowing outlook to receive but stopping it from sending. Firewall access was : Allow full access for Outlook Express. Turned it off and on to test and it worked with recieve but made no difference to send. Had to uninstall the suit to fix problem.

2: AVG 8 totally disabled network immediately after it was installed. (repeated)

And good old Nortons is well know for blocking networks after updating itself.

Any advice on some good tools would be most welcome.

684934 2008-07-03 09:32:00 Found this below - dont have mcafee so I cant check the settings --
open mcafee virus scan console...double click "access protection"....you see the list below....uncheck block mass mailing worms port 25. You can't have that checked if using smtp mail. OR...you could edit the rule to allow a certain program to use port 25. See if that works. Note: could be under task/Access protection
1. Open mcafee console from the sys tray. Right click on the McAfee icon and select VirusScan Console
2. View the properties under Task, Access Protection
3. Uncheck the rule that blocks outgoing messages on port 25.

Make sure you only have 1 AV on at once, Either Avast if you want a free one, or Nod32 if you prefer paid.

684935 2008-07-04 07:31:00 Ok, Thanks for that. I have switched to Nod32 as it appears to have less issues with it that some of the other suites.

Still would like to know of some good networking tools.
