684653 2008-07-02 10:03:00 I'd go for the quad-core.

Go Seagate for hard drives - get 2x 250GB or 2x320GB so you can split data from operating system - so if the system HD goes bellyup then your data is untouched.

Don't get more than 3GB if you;re using 32-bit Windows. If you;re going 64-bit by all means get 4GB (2x2GB is best IIRC)

Good graphics card.

Go for the Asus P5K-E (i prefer Asus though lol - never had a Gigabyte). Mine;s from the same series as your's and I couldn't be happier with it. Not sure of the P5K-E supports DDr3 RAM though

Get a Viewsonic 22" LCD. Couldn't be happier with mine (upgraded from 15" CRT lol) AVOID AOC. CHEAP AND NASTY. Has colour fringing that is very noticeable.

Any DVD drive should be fine.

684655 2008-07-02 10:15:00 Pricespy don't sell parts, They list what shops are selling the parts for, or in many cases they list the price that the (some) shops refuse to honour.

My advice is to pick a shop with a good range and good prices (and a good name) and buy as many of your components from them as possible.

684657 2008-07-02 11:01:00 You can see in my sig I've got pretty much the same parts. If I were you I'd see if I could get a GTX260.

One thing I did regret kind of was not getting an SLi capable MoBo. That may not bother you, and if it doesn't then this one's great.

Another thing is I spent WAY too much on my case. Go for a mid size case at ascent is my suggestion. If you don't plan on recycling the current one that is. I'd go for this one (www.ascent.co.nz) if I had to do it again.

Also... the thermalright ultra 120 eXtreme looks to be the best cooler on the market if you want to OC. And if you do, this board/CPU combo has done heaps for me. 3.5ghz, sitting at 60C and the fan's on silent(ish). I can get way more if I want, but 3.5 is plenty for my likings.

And I've got a viewsonic VX2240 which I LOVE! (except not literally...)

684659 2008-07-02 12:16:00 Hey guys
thanks for your replies.

Firstly, y cant i get more than 3gb RAM if i decide to use 32-bit vista. how does the software affect the hardware??
Anyways I might decide to install Xp pro instead because im not used to using Vista yet.

And i dont think im going to O/C my pc because im not sure how to. So do i still need to get some sophisticated cooling device??

Im going to use the pc for almost anything lik watching movies, playing games, doing some designing if i have time etc..

Do i need to keep a look out for a cpu with G0 steping , although i dont know what that means.
Im thnking of a motherboard that can support up to 8gb of ram so in otherwords im want to build a pc that i can upgrade at a later stage if i have to.

684660 2008-07-02 12:52:00 There is no need to get more than 3 gigs ram in 32 bit operating system like XP will not notice it is there. You could install 4 Gigs and use 1 Gig as a RAM disk maybe but it is not easy to do.

Can be done though.

Windows 32bit can only address 3GB of memory, if you look it up on google you'll find a good explanation. Dansdata.com did a good write up on it a little while back.

You don't need anything special if you're not planning to overclock, just the heatsink that comes with the chip. And I would recommend getting the G0 stepping Q6600 if you can. They run cooler, and a bit faster. It also means that if you do want to OC in the future, you have a bit of room to play in.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting 8GB in there either, although almost all Motherboards these days will support that.

Do you have any components currently? ie: are you going to re-use an existing case/power supply that you have? Or are you starting from scratch? $1.5k is optimistic, but probably not impossible.
