684662 2008-07-02 23:19:00 Windows 32bit can only address 3GB of memory, if you look it up on google you'll find a good explanation. Dansdata.com did a good write up on it a little while back.

You don't need anything special if you're not planning to overclock, just the heatsink that comes with the chip. And I would recommend getting the G0 stepping Q6600 if you can. They run cooler, and a bit faster. It also means that if you do want to OC in the future, you have a bit of room to play in.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting 8GB in there either, although almost all Motherboards these days will support that.

Do you have any components currently? ie: are you going to re-use an existing case/power supply that you have? Or are you starting from scratch? $1.5k is optimistic, but probably not impossible.

G0 stepping is slightly expensive but i might decide to get that. Does it make a major difference in choosing the ram speed?? Im planning to go for the 800mhz.

Im building a new pc from scratch to replace my win98 pc.. :D

I just realised that the 9600GT is DDR3 and im not sure if the mobo can take it. Does it mean it also consumes more power compared to a DDR2 card??

I was thinking of getting a Antec Sonata 3 case or a Raidmax Sagitta 2 case (with psu)
Any comments??

684663 2008-07-02 23:31:00 Nice looking cases, but there are no vents on the side of the Antec model - only at the back.

If you get a 9600 you'll need a better PSU than the one that comes with the case.

684664 2008-07-02 23:35:00 The RAM type on the video card doesn't matter so much, as this is used by the memory bus on the card itself, it's not referenced by the Mobo so you'll be fine. The 9600GT is a good card, if you don't want to game hardcore then I'd thoroughly recommend it.

G0 stepping is just a refresh on the original Q6600 AFAIK, it runs cooler, and consumes less power.

Your RAM speed is fine. I just decided to get higher clocking RAM to give me more headroom when I started to OC, and given that you don't want to do that you shouldn't need to worry. Even if you do decide to, it just means you've got to mess about with dividers a bit more, but don't worry about this.

Cases are a matter of personal preference. If you like the look, and like the price then go for it. I would have picked one with more room to add extra fans if I had the benefit of hindsight. Which is why I suggested the one before. It looks nice, and has room for 7 120mm fans, and is only ~$150... if you want a tiny wind tunnel in your bedroom it will work nicely... not sure about how noisy it is though.

What size PSU does it come with?

684665 2008-07-02 23:44:00 Just to elaborate on the RAM speed, the Q6600 has a quad pumped 266 bus = 1066, therefore matching RAM would be DDR533 533\2 = 266, therefore DDR2800 800\2 = 400, so you have alot of room to clock your bus up to 400 without worrying about your RAM speed. SolMiester (139)
684666 2008-07-02 23:54:00 Awesome explanation with a bit of calculations there, Sol. Thanks

So lets say if I am a hardcore gamer, then the 9600GT wouldnt be enough? Well im not a hardcore gamer, yet. ehehe but I would like to try out a few games that I could'nt support on my crappy XP pc.

That coolermaster case that you recommended looks nice but im not sure if its a well known brand and if its a reliable brand. And its PSU is only 460W.

The other two that i mentioned above have a 500W psu.

Ok lets say i decide to go with a 64bit Vista. Which one should i buy?
There's like Home Basic, Home prem, Ultimate, and business(dnt think i need this one). And the prices seem to vary alot between the OEM and a non OEM.

684668 2008-07-03 00:07:00 Hmmm... not liking the flimsy and cheap thing.

Well get what you want then I guess. Coolermaster IS a well known brand, but it is a fairly cheap case, and you tend to get what you pay for.

The 9600GT is a good card, unless you're expecting to play crysis well then I'd imagine you'd be perfectly happy with it. You may be able to get a factory OC'd xFx version cheaper than an asus or gigabyte, which would be even better.

You can buy that case without a PSU, and then just fit whatever you want on to it, which is what I'd do. But really it's up to you. There are plenty of good cases out there, and 7x 120mm fans really is overkill. So you'll be able to find something you like.

I suggest you don't get a full tower though. I did. And it's a freaking behemoth. You just won't believe how big it is.

Oh, and Re: RAM, you can probably get 800mhz on the Q6600 and then just change the divider to a point where it more closely matches the stock rating. at 1:1 though it will sit at 533 like solmeister says.

684669 2008-07-03 00:27:00 Im not sure what you mean by changing the divider etc.

Eventhough fulll towers are huge, i thout it would b good because it has more space for better ventilation.

I found this case NZXT LEXA Blackline Classic Performance Midtower
(500w psu optional)

684670 2008-07-03 00:34:00 I have a black Gigabyte GZ-X1 that looks nice, but only has space for 2 120mm fans.

$80 from Ascent (ascent.co.nz)

Not at all flimsy, has a bezel over the top 5.25" bay and the case has no sharp edges inside - they've all been rounded off.

Yeah, those are a very nice basic solid case.
