1428304 2016-11-02 23:37:00 I don't know what might have caused this problem, whether it be an MS update or something else, so I have now idea to what point I might 'Restore' to, if that is necessary.

I can no longer Copy and Paste, either within the main data drive or to/from any other drive connected at a USB port to another. I have tried the normal Ctrl C/Ctrl V and right click copy / right click paste options.
When attempting to copy/paste, an error message "Windows Explorer has Stopped Working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". Explorer then closes, but no solution has ever been proffered.

BUT, I can Cut and Paste normally, both with the keyboard shortcuts and the mouse option.

Really would like to find a solution because I often need copies, which is not now possible.

Thanks in advance to all you tech savvy folk.

? doesnt add up.
you can & cant copy & paste ?

Is it only copy & paste to USB that doesnt work ?
If so, could be faulty USB drives faulty USB ports, USB sleep/power save issues , AV gone bad etc etc etc

1428306 2016-11-03 01:02:00 I think you've misunderstood.

I Can't Copy & Paste. I Can Cut & Paste.
That scenario between any drive, or similarly on any individual drive.

1428307 2016-11-03 04:42:00 Try starting the computer in safe mode, ( press F8 on start) see if copy /paste works.

If it does it could be some sort of software corruption, could be something using to much memory, or to much junk in the cache files.

Have you tried cleaning out the system / temp files ?

1428308 2016-11-03 08:50:00 Thanks w-t.
Yes, I have just tried starting the pc in safe mode, and exactly the same results. Cut/paste no problem. Copy/paste no go - exactly same error message.
Cache files? Don't know about them, or how to clear them out. I do however use CleanUp! from time to time and that certainly frees up a bit of space. CCleaner as well. I'm thinking they both clean out the cache files, so, where to from here?

Thanks,

1428309 2016-11-03 08:52:00 How about drag and drop or right click send to - do they work? both default to copy mode between drives and move within the same drive.
Also try a restart and/or a complete power off at the wall for 30 seconds cold boot, shutting down normally doesn't necessarily clear everything out of memory.

If you can remember how long it's been happening try a system restore to an earlier date, run anti-virus and anti-malware scans, try the sfc /scannow command from an elevated command prompt.
See if any of that helps.

1428310 2016-11-03 11:14:00 Drag & Drop (same as cut & paste) works.
Right click - send to, creates a shortcut to the original but not a copy. The shortcut works, but that's not of any use if I want to have a copy to work with on another drive.
Yes, can drag & drop between drives, but not copy. Same error message.
Complete power down (several minutes) no cure.
Antivirus on full time with regular scans - no detection.
Anti-malware regular scans - always clean.
scf /scannow - done that. No problems identified.

So, essentially not resolved - no help. Thanks anyway.

1428311 2016-11-03 18:35:00 By any chance do you have any programs installed that are meant optimize your system, and / or registry cleaners ? (with the exception of ccleaner)

This is not a actual "fix" But you could try installing TeraCopy www.codesector.com (create a restore point first so you can change the system back if you wish) and see if that allows you to copy/paste. If it does its only a workaround, not a system repair.
Often system files and reg entries can get corrupted due to some program that's installed or some event.

Not being able to see whats there is only guess work to the cause, and try this try that etc.

1428312 2016-11-03 19:21:00 Drag and drop should not be the same as cut & paste unless you do it within the same drive. Between different drives it should act the same as copy & paste.
You could also drag with the right mouse button and choose copy from the context menu. Sounds like that won't help but if you haven't tried it it's worth a crack.

For send to it normally only creates a shortcut on the desktop, if selecting a drive it should copy by default. I use this feature frequently.

So it sounds like all your file copy options are mesed up, I don't normally like registry scanners but you could try the Ccleaner registry tool, it's about as safe as messing with the registry can be and may highlight the problem.
What anti-virus & anti-malware tools are you using? Installed anything new lately?
