1425971 2016-09-13 02:57:00 Anyone have a large SUV as just wanting to see which vehicle would suit 4 adults with 4 suitcases and 4 hand luggage. The rental companies in Brisbane have a few different ones like, Outlander,Santa Fe, Mazda CX9, Captiva, X-Trail,Kuga etc so would anyone know which vehicle might have the most luggage space? Cheers. bruciebear (1478)
1425972 2016-09-13 06:37:00 Dodge, Ford, Chevrolet, Lincoln, Jeep. Anything USA made/badged are huge cargo spacers. I have seen massive late model Ford, Jeep and Dodge. But I think huge engines (5 L?) SUV's - dwarfing most common Jap labelled SUV's... kahawai chaser (3545)

Of those SUVs listed,
Outlander would be the biggest for seating/luggage but heaviest user of petrol. The interior is quiet, with room for seven in three rows of seats. The base engine is a 166-hp 2.4-liter four mated to a CVT with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional. The GT has a 224-hp 3.0-liter V-6, a paddle-shifted six-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive. Handling is composed, but both engines are challenged by the Outlander’s weight—especially the four-cylinder with all-wheel drive. www.caranddriver.com

Santa Fe is good for luggage and people, its also a 2.2Ltr Diesel so runs very well.
XTrail is a 2.5 ltr petrol, will easily carry 4 adults with luggage. Also runs well.
Kuga would be too small.
I can't comment on the Mazda CX9 or the Captiva because we don't carry them on our rental fleet.

1425975 2016-09-14 23:46:00 Agree, if you want space, the Outlander or CX-9 would be my pick of those. We are actually looking to buy an Outlander, as having used them a few times lately have found them really practical. The X-trail and Kuga feel much smaller (we have had trouble fitting a larger-sized baby stroller in the boot of either, yet it comfortably fit in the CX-9 and Outlander), and I have had a Captiva as a company car not too long ago and found them to be too poor build quality and reliability - perhaps less relevant for a rental situation though. The CX-9 is really good, but pricier than the Outlander - again for rental that's perhaps less relevant, but for us looking to purchase, a $10k-odd price difference is a big factor (although keen to see how the coming-soon-new one impacts used prices). I've not driven a Santa Fe, so can't comment. inphinity (7274)

Having driven both a Highlander which would be equivalent of an Outlander and a Santa Fe as rental cars, my personal preference would be for the Santa Fe for power and fuel economy ( Diesel) and for luggage and seating. The Outlander would have slightly more carrying capacity than the Santa Fe but will lack in fuel economy being a V6 petrol. If this is not an issue for you then go for the Outlander.
The Santa Fe will do 700+ kms on a tank for highway motoring.
The Outlander will be closer to 550 km on the highway or 400-450 kms around town.

We rent the Highlander out on our fleet as a premium SUV 4x4 that can carry 7 passengers. Luggage will be reduced (4 small bags). I would imagine that the Outlander would be very similar.

Thanks - we don't expect to do a lot of distance in it, so fuel economy is not the biggest factor - although interestingly the manufacturers figures show the Outlander as far more fuel efficient (7.2l/100km vs Santa Fe's 9.4l/100km comparing the 2.4L Petrol variants of both). Purchase & maintenance costs, plus comfort/practicality, are the bigger concerns - and with a $20k difference in the price points when looking for new or near-new, the Outlander is certainly more tempting form that perspective. Likewise for Highlander, we're really not prepared to pay that much to buy. So on paper, the Outlander is cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, has the functionality we need and more, and while the Santa Fe is a bit 'classier' (but only if you go up the model list a bit), it costs 50% more without offering us anything extra on what we actually want/need.

Anyway.. sorry to derail the OPs rental query! :)
