685997 2008-07-07 05:16:00 I have a USB-IDE adaptor, which works fine - except on the tablet PC (problem after problem :badpc:). When I plug it in, Windows XP detects it, but doesn't install drivers. I have to go into Device Manager and install them manually, but it still doesn't show up in My Computer (even after assigning it a drive letter in Disk Management). The same drive and cable work perfectly on two other PCs (XP and Vista). What's wrong? pcuser42 (130)
685998 2008-07-07 05:56:00 maybe it's not getting enough power? Agent_24 (57)
685999 2008-07-07 06:05:00 It's a desktop drive and uses AC power, although it also happens with a notebook drive.

EDIT: It also happens with a flash drive, although it shows up in My Computer.

686000 2008-07-07 07:44:00 maybe there's something wrong with that PC? Agent_24 (57)
686001 2008-07-07 07:55:00 It was recently restored. pcuser42 (130)
686002 2008-07-07 12:32:00 Well it sounds like something's odd, if external drives don't work only on one machine.. Agent_24 (57)
686003 2008-07-07 12:48:00 Does it require USB2 ports??

Maybe your USBs are not supplying enough power??

I had a similar prob, but reformatting it fixed it (not suggesting you do that at this stage though!)

have you tried a linux live CD or similar? see if it works with that to determine if it's hardware or software issue?

686005 2008-07-07 21:01:00 Thanks, I'll try booting from a Linux CD.

I've already stated that it's a desktop drive, and uses AC power.

Yeah, but I can't use my external HD (that also runs on AC) on any front or low-power USB ports... :)
