685935 2008-07-07 03:15:00 Hi there all. I've been given an old Dell 260 GX. I currently have a PC which I want to retire. If I remove the hard drive from my old computer and put it into the Dell, will it work? the old PC is an Athlon 1.2 chip, the Dell is a P4 2.8
could it be so simple...? i fear not?

685936 2008-07-07 03:49:00 Format it and start again. It can be done but it is messy, removing drivers and putting in replacements for the new hardware/mboard. Bantu (52)
685937 2008-07-07 03:54:00 I have the Windows XP CD, which is OEM with the old PC. it won't install onto the other HD will it? theob (7255)
685938 2008-07-07 03:58:00 It'll install its activating that may not work

If its been over 6-12 mths since you activated, it should work

Other than that, a system repair might work (or may not).

It wont work (it'll crash if you put the hdd in a different case with a different CPU)

685941 2008-07-07 06:18:00 help!
after booting the dell with my XP cd in the drive, it happily starts, until it reaches a blue screen of death.- with stripes!
the technical information reads:
STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, etc
the numbers overlap and appear in white and pink, so a litttle hard to determine what to cut and paste into google,
the four diagnostic lights on the bacl of the dell are all green

I don't need to format the drive do I? or is that the problem?
cheers Theo

685942 2008-07-07 07:06:00 If this is an old copy of XP without any service packs on the cd then it won't support PCI until service pack 2 is installed just turn off PCI in the bios. Does it say PCI.sys or somethin similar if so do the above.

are you kidding or what ?........

PCI is 'periphal communication interface'.........it's the white 'expansion' slots inside the computer box.........they've been around for YEARS........even win95 'supports' pci..........what DO you mean ?

yes it will..........eventually......or maybe if you are exceptionally lucky it'll work pretty well straight off.....

what happens is that you are trying to run a pc with an operating system which has been installed on a different pc........it'll usually throw a wobbly and do just what you have .......bluescreen......this is most often because of the drivers etc installed on the 'old' sysetm......you need to set the pc to run from cd as first boot device.......and then start it up with the 'old' drive and the xp cd.........be aware it WONT 'automatically' boot to the cd it'll give you five seconds to 'press any key to boot from cd' ........if you miss this prompt it'll try to boot from the harddrive .......(and at some point almost certainly 'bluescreen'....i suspect this is whats happening)

anyway having booted from cd you then need to follow the prompts to INSTALL windows........it *should* 'see' the existing operating system on the 'old' drive and offer you the option of 'repairing' it........this is what you need to choose........have your product key number ready.......after doing this 'repair install' you will have an operational copy of windows.......you'll need to re-install drivers for the 'new' motherboard/lan/sound card/modem/video etc and also 'activate' the copy of xp with microsoft after you've done it...
