685662 2008-07-06 02:04:00 :groan: I use AVG8 free and since the last core update it is dialing up to the internet every 10- minutes to check for updates - there is no dialing box for me to uncheck - it just dials - - any ideas on how to change it as I do like this FREE antivirus programme thanks Laraine Laraine Chezick (12228)
685663 2008-07-06 02:30:00 With AVG open go to Components Tab and select Update Manager

More advanced settings available from Tools/Advanced settings and select and expand Update from the list.

685665 2008-07-06 09:50:00 I checked all the advanced tab settings and it is set to update each day at 10.00 --- which it does not of course - any other ideas please - - I thought 7.5 was not being updated any longer??? Thats why I had to go to the 8.0 version Laraine Laraine Chezick (12228)
685666 2008-07-06 10:33:00 Untick any option that allows auto updates, regardless of the time, most AV's will try to auto update if the selected time is missed.

AVG8 has had many reports of causing problems not in previous versions - it appears to be going backwards.

685669 2008-07-07 13:33:00 Hi Laraine,

Go to Tools, Advanced Settings, Update (click on + sign if necessary), Dial-up. If there is a tick in the "Use dial-up connections" check box untick it. I believe that should stop it dialling up independently. On my system it just senses when I am online and updates at that time (same as 7.5 used to).

685671 2008-07-09 11:40:00 Get Avast...or get AVG 7.5...

I second that Avast is an awesome FREE scanner, I found that with recent versions of AVG the rate of false positives was astounding.

Stuff that it picked up as harmful i tested by using VM's and Sandboxie, the so-called infected files didn't alter my VM's files and no evidence of anything trying to talk to the net for smtp or other were shown by Sandboxie.

I was a fan of AVG and used to recommend it, nowadays Avast is what i use on my many pc's and recommend to others.
