| 424752 | 2006-01-27 22:54:00 | I've just been reading penny arcade, and this letter caught my eye: We received the following from a young man who we will call "Mr. Smith." (CW)TB Hey guys, I interviewed for a guerilla marketing business in San Francisco that targeted web forums. I was told that if I accepted the job, I was to have at LEAST 50 identities on as many forums as I could muster (they wanted 100 eventually), with a goal of 5 posts an hour. The posts had to be well thought out, and the idea was that I was to establish multiple identities with a history on the forums, so that when the timing was right a well written but subtly placed marketing post could be finessed in. And regular visitors would recognize the post as coming from a long time poster. They had 12 people working there full time, and were hiring 10 more. You do the math. No wait, I'll do it for you: that's 880 posts a day (if minimum was met). However he said the better ones could do around 8 or 10 an hour. And they had different "verticals" so there was the sports guy, and the games guy, the hentai, excuse me I mean anime guy, etc. But the most critical point was this: develop and integrate the identity. No random "HEY EB GAMES IS AWESOME BUY THIS" stuff. Kinda spooky. Does anyone use "guerilla" marketing tactics in NZ? If anyone planted someone in pressf1, would you be able to spot them? |

If anyone planted someone in pressf1, would you be able to spot them?I find it odd that it's San Fran based rather than some peasant nation, as the profit potential seems not too high . One assumes that one is expectected to market by telling people to buy fro XCV Ltd via a link that somehow gives credit to the "long established forum member" who posts the link . This flys in the face of Pf1 rules, so i assume the link would be short lived . . . Thats lots of work for a link that lasts 5 minutes . If someone constantly was to recomend XCV Ltd, even in the correct context of a technical thread, i think the trend would become obvious . There's a lot of sloppy forums out there, and PF1 is fairly well moderated . Some small promotion could be achieved here by a "plant" but not enough to warrent the work involved . The banning of a "plant" would counter any promotional value for XCV Ltd |

| 424754 | 2006-01-27 23:46:00 | I think it's Metla . . . he's obviously making gazillions (that's billions of billions) out of trade F1 and is actually sitting comfortably in some mansion with lots of dolly birds (like in that 'cough' wonderful Linx Airline ad) catering to his every beck and call . One day soon you'll be hit up to buy a helmet cam or maybe even some fluffy slippers . |

| 424755 | 2006-01-28 00:10:00 | heheh Are there any plants in this forum?I kinda doubt it... IDG's local NZ branch ain't exactly the dimmest spot in the shade; and therefore know that regular contributers would soon enough find out. That = pretty bad publicity. |

| 424756 | 2006-01-28 00:34:00 | I use "Gorilla Marketing Tactics", is that similar to "Guerilla Marketing Tactics"? The subtle difference perhaps being if they don't buy what I am selling, I rip their arms off. |

That might make it hard for them to back-track and dig deep in their pocket for loose change, possibly suggesting that you will rip their arms off would be more successful :D |

Its also of interest to note that this sober revelation confirms that genetic enhancement of a lawyer will make it reach the intellectual equivalent of a tomato plant. All is now revealed, the world is a better place with this knowledge. Now to make some relish. |
