424455 2006-01-26 20:45:00 Just wondering if anyone who uses Winamp has noticed any difference in the quality of playback between older and newer versions of Winamp?

Up until recently I was using the most recent version, but since my reformat I've gone back to ver 5.01 (2003). I kinda prefer it because it's slicker to load. I can't perceive any difference in sound quality, but for the benefit of my guests and neighbours, if any audiophiles out there reckon later is greater, then I'll upgrade.

Thanks.

424457 2006-01-26 21:09:00 In my understand winamp new versions are to update certain areas of the program like cd burning etc...the quality of the music still remains the same unless the other versions may be updated with a 5.1 codec...I have tried other players but find that winamp sounds more crisp and music is undistorted. 424458 2006-01-26 21:25:00 I think that 5.01 has a few security holes that have been patched in later versions. Greven (91)

424461 2006-01-26 23:13:00 I actually thought that WinAMP had ceased development...Might be true. But it's still a brilliant and fully functional player.

Perhaps they thought it just couldn't get any better? Which may also be true.

424462 2006-01-26 23:36:00 More likely it was bought by AOL who then started to focus on bloat rather then desirable features, and then ceased deveopment completely and fired the devs.

All at the cost of millions of dollars.

The last members of the original Winamp team have said goodbye to AOL and the door has all but shut on the Nullsoft era, BetaNews has learned.

Only a few employees remain to prop up the once-ubiquitous digital audio player with minor updates, but no further improvements to Winamp are expected.

Winamp's abandonment comes as no surprise to those close to the company who say the software has been on life support since the resignation of Nullsoft founder and Winamp creator Justin Frankel last January.

The marriage of Nullsoft and AOL was always one of discontent. After AOL acquired the small company in 1999 for around $100 million, the young team of Winamp developers was assimilated into a strict corporate culture that begged for rebellion. Although Nullsoft was initially given a long leash by AOL, It wasn't long until the two ideologies collided.

Seems they got bored at AOl and created and released Gnutella, which wen't down like a bomb with the suits.

424464 2006-01-27 00:08:00 They created gnutella aswell? Those guys deserve a medal or something.
I wonder how many ex winamp devs contribute to XMMS since it is a clone of winamp?
