424014 2006-01-24 23:36:00 SOE in 1987 and sold in 1990. These things take time, both Labour and National (after Piggy) would have been involved. The juicy morsel is getting a bit dry now, time to replace it rather than fight over its dead body. PaulD (232)

424016 2006-01-24 23:49:00 wasn't it Labour? i remember Lange going around saying the money would be put into health & education, & nothing was? MartynC (5610)
424017 2006-01-24 23:54:00 Yes it was Labor who sold it. paulw (1826)
424018 2006-01-24 23:56:00 To Labour's everlasting shame, it was the scum headed by "Sir" Roger Douglas and his slimy "merchant banker" mates who decided that it made good sense to pay other scum to take away the assets built up over the years. They weren't asset sales. They were giveaways. Various scum "experts" were paid huge fees to "advise" on the sales. These are the sort of "experts" who audited the Cook Islan Government accounts. The sort who of "experts" who audited Enron. Graham L (2)
424019 2006-01-25 04:32:00 Your affection for Telecom warms me greatly. :)

How they manage to get away with their 'neither sh*t nor get off the pot' game playing beats me. And the same can be said of the Government and their toothless telecommunications commission or whatever they call themselves.

424020 2006-01-25 10:08:00 This is my favorite bit
"The New Zealand Treasury has estimated the economic loss from Telecom's monopoly to be in the region of $50–$250 million a year. Another study commissioned in 1998 by rival company Clear (now TelstraClear) estimated that the loss was $400 million a year."
