| 423495 | 2006-01-23 08:31:00 | Hey. I've found me a laptop i want - Asus V6va (v6011va model) Only thing, NO ONE in NZ can get it (i emailed pretty much every store on pricespy, either they didn't have it, couldn't get it, or there suppliers couldn't get it) BUt its available in Australia. Only thing, only a few of them ship to NZ, but those that do have said i'd have to pay full price (aus GST incl). if i done this, i'd then pay NZ gst when it comes into customs. so how can i get around paying the aus gst - or how can i claim it (aus gst) bak? Thanks |

I think the dealers over there are 'having you on', possibly still charging the GST for their trouble. There's not much you can do about it if they insist as they've got you by the 'short and curlies' if you can't get it here. |

You also get a duty free allowance when you come back into NZ of $700 but of course you will have used it by then, maybe even loaded an old backup on so of course it won't be brand new at all officer..... |

| 423499 | 2006-01-23 09:24:00 | Ex-westy is probably right... if i flew over there it probably would work out cheaper! but i don't think i can do that. i'm going to email a few more and see whats what. another thing thats coming up, they are saying 'we only accept direct transfer (for payment) due to security measures' but this may be all good for them, but for me theres no way of getting the money bak if the deal falls thro... is this correct? does anyone know any Asus dealers/wholesalers in NZ? Thanks |

Thanks Gads! Looks like Australians don't trust NZ'rs . . . or is it just F-1'ers who are also NZ'ers? I am on your side . . . if you don't like Australians, then I will volunteer to not like them also . . . but I would hate to throw out all my Dundee movies . . I like Paul Hogan . Can NZ secretly nationalize him as a citizen in absentia? What's the gunnery range to Australia? Is Australia within range of your largest guns? Can you move your island a little closer if your artillery can't reach? |

It takes less than 4 hours flight time to get there and there is practically a shuttle service running between the two countries by several airlines resulting in probably about 40 flight every day . You might be interested to know that there are over 400,000 NZ citizens living in Australia that is about 10% of our population . New Zealanders are culturally very similar to Australians, and intermarriage is common . Expatriates children often have divided loyalties . It is difficult to say when one becomes more Aussie than Kiwi; the acid test is probably allegiance during international sporting contests . |

I'm tellin' ya, we have a more "humane" approach :D On the other hand, Aussies seem to have a more efficient government, that's why they are getting a tax-cut when we're stuck with a government who insists a tax cut is unaffordable when our own Treasury department advised on tax cut... so yeah, we do love the Aussies sometimes :D Onto the main topic: unfortunately you have to pay GST the moment it enters New Zealand, as you are considered a "private importer" under our law. However, do a calculation on 1) delivery fee to get it here (usually FedEx or DHL, so use their online calculator to get an estimate) and 2) NZ GST. If it is over 200, well, consider using Freedom Airs and visit Australia! Just remember to come back :D |
