423607 2006-01-23 10:22:00 Our old Toyota Hiace is 20 years old this year. The 'leather' is cracked, the seals are too, it's covered in cobwes and is beginning to rust.
Engine still runs like a beaut

423608 2006-01-23 10:42:00 I'm not very mechanically minded & don't know much about what I'm driving - just how to drive it. I do know the basics though - I can pump petrol (what is so hard about stick it in the hole & pull the trigger?) change a wheel & check/top up the oil (haven't had to change the oil yet as I don't own my own car.)

Mechanics must hate working on Subarus - they don't waste any space space under the hood. Subaru's policy seems to be if there is room under the hood, stick something in to fill it up

423609 2006-01-23 16:37:00 Not meaning comps, but cars, vehicles, automobiles . . . . . . . .

How many people feel confident to do things on the vehicles they own?

like basics . . . pump petrol? check oil? add oil?
Do you get petrol attendents to do this?
or do that stuff yourself?
or a friend / family member do this for you?

How many people no nothing of a vehicle? inns and outs?
How many here could strip a motor and put one back together again no probs and get it to go at the end?

things i once took for granted about vehicles have since changed and im floundering around learning new territory . . . . . things i never was concerned with before now worry me because of lack of knowledge . . . . . and mechanical ability . . . .

Things i relied on, are no longer an option and with my great history of electrical and mechanical items im destined to kill all vehicles i have contact with now and in the future . . . . .

also i find because i am female, and go to garages or car dealers they are just ready to pull the wool over your eyes and when i walk away they dont care . . . . . even tho they lost a potential customer . . . . . :waughh:

is it a female thing or a life in general thing?

hope some of this makes sense . . . . . more likely not

Having been and now retired from the auto/vehicle repair and service end of the spectrum for over 40 years in the US, I can see your point Beetle .

Sorry to say that there's a stiff penalty for not knowing what's going on under the hood, especially if there's a "mechanic" working on it for you .

Ahhh! There's the scenerio! A young lady with a (purse! remember another post about that Beetle!), mini skirt and heels pulls into a gas station and there are guys running to help or drool . . . well . . . . . the heels and mini and the purse aren't indicators so much any more . . but I digress .

It's just the chivalrous thing to do for young studly guys to assist a damsel in a car and herein lies the rub: when you get such attention to you and your vehicle by just being female, it creates an arena that is designed to not let you learn some of the basics of vehicle ownership . Being female is so limiting!

You never get to break your knuckles on a stubborn bolt, smash your fingers with a hammer and chisel, get hot transmission fluid running down your arms and into your armpits, have scalding radiator fluid erupt all over your shoes and feet . Too bad . . . . you are indeed not getting the full flavor of vehicle ownership . Silly girls!

423610 2006-01-23 16:52:00 I'm wondering where these "service stations" are. I haven't seen one in years where someone fills your tank. They all seem to be do it yourself. JJJJJ (528)
423611 2006-01-23 19:40:00 I will have a go at some things. Will do oil, filter, pads, plugs, belts, the basic stuff.
Once tried timing chain on old Mazda 929, was one link out (thankfully motor built like brick-****house so only bent 1 valve slightly). Haven't done timing chains since.
Will wire own stereo (with cd tuner, amp, subbie), change electric window switch (console or door), change electric aerial... I have always been more into the electrics side of things.

Godfather,

I have heard that SWMBO's are relatively (sic) easy to maintain. Every 50,000ks get them tanked up, throw some flowers their way and toss in a few diamonds... works wonders and they are then good for a few times around the clock :DMan,you got ripped off... all I gotta do is hop into bed while shes still awake :D:p

423612 2006-01-23 20:07:00 Yes . . well running to the aid of the pretty female isn't just a gas station thing, i've noticed the best way to pay minamal dump fees is to go in with a female, preferably blond, ample cleavage, her driving the truck . . . . . a much friendlier price is charged than big hairy Chris pulling up with a ton of domestic waste to dump .

That also works for cue jumping . My um "well endowed and proud" friend walked up to a midnight opening of now deceased Echo records in CHCH where the cue was half way down High street . She simply walked into the front of the cue and took "her" spot . . I simply walked up, coz she was my friend, and took "my" spot beside her . This was much to the quiet discust of the drooling guys who just let my friend in :p . . saved half an hours wait for a cheap CD and a free T shirt each .

As for mechanical ability . . . i'm good at stuff, do my own wiring, plumbing, building, but much of my truck maintanance i do at a unique garage where I know the owner, and he prefers me to do most of the work . He tells me what needs to be done, and he only personally does what absolutely requires his greater skills .

In my wilder days i was transfering engines between bodys of HQ holdens with great regularity, and could usualy have the rebodied engine, or the repowered body back on the road within a day .

I can't weld well, the welds hold, but you can clearly see it wan't done by a skilled person .

Paperwork scares the living bejesus out of me .

423613 2006-01-23 21:50:00 LOL

well i dont know many of thosse men running to help at service stations either . . . . well not helping me at any rate . . . . . . ill start worrying when its a female running towards me to help . . . .

But as some may know, my life has had a dramatic change recently and now i need to know more mechanics and how to keep my vehicle safe, from harm . . . . . . - me mostly, and road legal . worries me i may not see the police man, and be un warranted or road legal and cause a fine i cannot afford or a breakdown in god knows where and no help to the rescue . . . . . . :(

I use to help remove engines and go motocrossing and such like and 4wd but now am totally lost in a new world i am no longer part of, or know how to go about these daily chores quite the same .

that thing or saying that goes, Cant live with em, but cant live without em seems to hold a certain amount of truth in it .

and it seems there not many males in wangavegus ready and willing to help a beetle in distress either . . . . . LOL

i digress .

I know how to weld, i used to know how to use a lathe, and i could change oil sparkplugs and axles on a range of vehicles, but alas, blondeness has taken hold and i have forgotten the most basic things i once knew . . . . . .

I can cook, clean, and keep children in line all well and good, but ask me what oil i need and where to place it and i am sad to say im lost . . . . . . . . . . .

now i know enuf comp wise to get me outa trouble, i just call 0800 METLA . . . . . . . . . . . . LOL

any others ????

423614 2006-01-23 22:38:00 I've rebuilt an old Alfa Romeo virtually from the ground up, but I'd be completely lost when it comes to modern engines. Maybe I could change the brake pads and give it a minor service. But that's about it! :( Greg (193)
423615 2006-01-24 02:21:00 All of a sudden this reminds me of a Harry Enfield clip that was on TV4...

"Ohh look at you waving your lovely big nozzle about..." Ahh British humor. :)
bob_doe_nz (92)
423616 2006-01-24 03:03:00 Well, today I got served gas by a female attendant. I was being bloody minded becase I didn't feel like standing in the horizontal rain while I held the nozzle. Would have been quicker to do it myself as I had to tell her three times that I wanted it filled up, then another 3 times what petrol to use... while I got soaking wet anyway :illogical

It's just not the same when a woman waves a big nozzle around either :D
