| 423365 | 2006-01-23 03:14:00 | Having spent a large number of years driving "emergency vehicles", I was only reprimanded once and reminded that "emergency vehicles must not pass each other en-route to the emergency". Damn, mine was the fastest (V8). Really took all the fun out of it. Favourite thing was to be zooming along, blue and red light bar on, headlights flashing etc and the "little old lady" (or man) in the car ahead had not looked in the miiror. When close enough (allowing for safety of course), hit the siren and look at the startled reaction. New underwear time I suspect .... Those were the days. <sigh> |

They may not have done a service driving course, they have insurance issues etc etc. Ambulance can exceed the speed limit as described in my earlier post. There may be different implications for different staff skill levels etc, but as a whole it's legal. |

| 423367 | 2006-01-23 03:39:00 | I remember that me and my friends, being bored teenagers, parked outside a cop shop one night . The plan was the follow any cop cars that leave in order to find the action . Problem was that when the cop car was leaving, often with no lights on, it would speed along at a good 70k's and theres no way you're gonna speed right next to a cop . Next time we just asked people where the wild shore party's were rather than following the thin blue line! |

The cops are under the law like everyone else . If they're chasing some half-wit in a souped up car then it is the cops who have to give up the chase because if they wiped someone out en route there would be hell to pay . Letters to the Ed about irresponsible cops' behaviour, "Why aren't they out catching criminals instead of racing around the streets?", all that . :2cents: |

Police are considered "traffic control" and as such are subject to basic speed laws in the quest of their daily activities, ie flowing with traffic and setting a decent pace in spite of the posted limits . There are times when they need to expedite, and they are in CODE2, or with red lights and no sirens . This is to get them to the scene in a quicker manner, but not at very high speed . CODE3 is full speed (at descretion) with red lights and siren . As to lights . . there are some interesting laws there too . Blue lights are reserved to weapon-carrying officers and are displayed in the lightbar of the police vehicle or motorcycle . Aircraft are NOT allowed to have firearms and therefor they are not to display blue lights . This is not stating that the officer(s) in the aircraft cannot carry sidearms . Flashing red lights mean an officer of the law, and when displayed with the blue lights as above, they are entitled to pursue and arrest and use lethal force if necessary . Police vehicles that are attempting to stop and arrest or ticket a driver of another vehicle must display a red, non-flashing or non-oscillating light to the front . Vehicles are NOT to stop for a police car that does not display a solid-non-flashing light . Police are not allowed to shoot from a moving vehicle . Tow trucks and other non-emergency vehicles shall display amber lights, flashing and rotating, but not a steady beam . No sirens are allowed and they may not exceed the speed limits unless escorted by authorities . No sirens are allowed, and tow trucks are not to carry firearms . Ambulances shall display red flashing lights and are allowed to have a siren and klaxon-type horn to clear intersections and passage . They are allowed to use these lights to and from the scene of their call, with or without a patient aboard . They can exceed the speed limit, but most don't do so by very much if at all . They may not carry firearms . School busses with red lights flashing can cause all lanes of a non-divided roadway to halt until the lights are turned off and the students are either loaded onto or off the bus . Carrying firearms on school busses by passengers is forbidden . . . drivers might be exempt of that regulation in some rural areas . Now here's something strange . If an ambulance with a patient aboard in full cardiac arrest, a fire truck on the way to a 5-alarm fire, a police car or even the FBI in full code 3, and a US post office vehicle arrive at the same 4-way stop intersection, the postoffice vehicle has the right-of-way! |

| 423374 | 2006-01-23 06:54:00 | They are allowed to if they are doing something of very high priority, like getting the PM to a rugby match. But they're not allowed to, according to the judge. :D Yet that turned out to be a big deal as it helped secure the 2011 RWC, thank god our PM has a liking for other interest besides the arts. |
