686099 2008-07-08 04:08:00 If you have been using 8.04 for a while and doing all the updates ( as I have ) you will have at least 3 different Kernels to choose from.
What you want to do is to try and get into recovery mode.

Does it give you a list of kernels to boot before defaulting to the latest?
Usually there will be something like Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic (recovery mode) in the list as well.
See what you can do in recovery mode if you can get that far.

The kernel list is found in /boot/grub/menu.lst
If youre not seeing this list try running sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
set timeout to 10sec or so to give you a list of kernels and recovery options.

686100 2008-07-08 08:34:00 Are you seeing the blank screen after the Login Greeter page?

Does this (bugzilla.gnome.org) describe your problem?

686101 2008-07-08 12:41:00 Start off:
press CTRL+ALT+F2
login
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
answer the questions with default values. Driver to choose= radeon
When you are back at the prompt, type:
sudo reboot
It should load into the full X gui for you.

Then follow the steps here:
wiki.cchtml.com
or for older versions, eg Gutsy:

Have fun!
