2008-07-06 11:32:00 | I just installed ubuntu from july dvd (burnt a cd). Now when I try to boot I get: "grubloading please wait error 22" I can only boot into linux using the cd but cant boot into Vista. Also the disc won't eject for me to do anything else while linux is running. Tony

2008-07-07 06:03:00 | Welcome to PressF1 Tony. I've moved your post to a thread of its own, rather than it being mixed in with a different Ubuntu issue. It sounds like Grub wasn't installed properly. Did you follow the default prompts when it came to saving the bootloader? To fix this, try following the steps here: Using the Desktop/Live CD to install Grub into your MBR (Master Boot Record) (help.ubuntu.com). Make sure you follow the steps carefully and take note of any case sensitivity. The "Quick Start" section ought to do the trick. If it looks confusing, just ask for clarification before attempting it. If you are running Ubuntu off the CD, then you can't eject it mid-flight - that would be the equivalent of removing your C drive while Windows is running. Let us know how you get on. :)

2008-07-07 08:52:00 | Thanks Jen I re-installed ubuntu from the disk and changed the bootloader hd no. It then gave me the option at boot up of linux (default) or vista I will stay with linux a little longer. Can I change the boot loader so that vista is the default? Tony

2008-07-07 09:17:00 | Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst so that the line that says "default 0" or what ever has the correct operating system (it starts numbering from 0). | johnd (85) | |
2008-07-07 10:58:00 | Just to clarify what John said ... Open up a terminal window and enter in this command. You can copy and paste it if you like as that will avoid typos and missing/adding white spaces. Note, that is a lowercase L and not the number 1 in menu.lst. sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst_backup Enter in your password when prompted. This is creating a backup copy of the grub menu. Then enter in: gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst Look for the line that says: default=0 The '0' indicates the first (Grub starts with a 0, not a 1 when counting) section is the default OS to boot. You need to change the 0 to whatever section number Windows is listed on. From comments posted on the web, it looks like it will be section 4. If you are not sure, then just copy and paste the contents of menu.lst here and we can tell you how to edit it correctly.

I have also indicated where each Title line starts so that you can see how Grub counts the numbers that you can use for each booting option default. Note, I have cropped out the large middle section of your menu.lst so don't copy and paste from this example. You have two Windows sections, but I am guessing Vista boots from the first partition on your C drive? If so, that is line 4 (hd0,0). From the menu.lst you posted, you need to change default to: default 4 Note, there is no = sign in this line. |
