685983 2008-07-07 04:55:00 A friend uses Hotmail and all of a sudden she can’t open her mail.

She can log on and reach the inbox ok but just can’t open anything.

The Browser seems fine as it opens Google, Trade Me and other sites no problem.

It’s something I’ve never struck before so I’m looking for ideas.

It started doing it out of the blue a couple of days ago.

685987 2008-07-07 07:55:00 OK, it works fine on my computer .

This has only recently happened and I've just updated OE5 to OE6 Sp1 because she said some sites recommended she did that . However, that solved nothing .

Can you completely uninstall OE6 and Reinstall it?

It's odd that other sites work fine but opening Mail in the Inbox appears to be the only problem .

I note a little message "Java" appears in the bottom status bar when I try to open anything . Could this be a clue?

Got me licked! :(

685988 2008-07-07 08:08:00 And you've tried Firefox or Opera as well?

If the Java thing comes up, trying updating to the newest version.

685989 2008-07-07 12:26:00 Are you talking about web mail or pop3 with Outlook Express?

If it's OE that she is having probs downloading mail, it could very well be MS terminating the pop3 access.

I have had 2 hotmail accounts for many many years, and they have been warning me for quite some time that OE mail access would be terminated "in the near future"

One account was a couple months ago, but I still have full access to send/recieve thru OE with the other, but I know it is on limited time also.

685990 2008-07-07 21:06:00 I'm guessing your friend is running Windows 2000 or earlier?

Putting that kinda info in the original post is helpful. ;)

Clean out temp files with CCleaner.

Reset Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab -> Restore advanced settings settings. (Or something like that).

Also go to the security and privacy tabs, and if either the "Reset all zones to default level" or "default" buttons aren't greyed out, press those too.

Do a Windows Update, get the latest patches on there.

Go here (www.java.com) and install the latest version of Java.

and here (www.adobe.com) and update the adobe flash player

If that doesn't fix it, there's possibly an issue with a service not starting or something, or some .dll files needing to be re-registered. we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

If that doesn't solve it, post a HijackThis log.

685991 2008-07-07 22:15:00 Thanks guys .

Yep, I should have posted more information  but for some reason I thought it was probably simple and that I was the problem .

Anyway, here’s the update .

The OS is WinME on an old P2 on Dial-Up .

The fault occurred on Internet Explorer 5 which I updated to IE6 without fixing the problem .

She accesses the account direct from the Web, not from Outlook Express .

As far as I know the machine only gets used on HotMail and to check her banking .

As I said previously, the machine seems to work fine, other than opening the Mail .

Sooooooo, I’ll follow up on what’s already has been suggested and get back to you .

685992 2008-07-08 04:42:00 Well guys this was a weirdo!

I did everything suggested but no luck .

So, in desperation I uninstalled AVG 7 . 5 and eureka we have lift off . :clap

It was a straight out guess born from desperation that made me uninstall AVG but I wondered if it could have been an automatic update that wrecked things .

I’ll never know for sure because I don’t feel inclined to reinstall it and see if the problem comes back . :)

Given that this is an old computer used for a few minutes a day on Dial-Up plus having an elderly OS, (because it can’t run anything else), I thing I’ll just leave it run naked .

I know of another chap who has run a similar computer in similar circumstances for about 8 years and has never had anything like a Virus so we’ll see .

:thanks everyone for your input .
