my friend said it might be my graphics card or my PSU

Has it only just started doing this? Your PSU is a little on the light (wattage) size. Do you know what brand it is?

685739 2008-07-07 00:19:00 1. If you have an lcd monitor it should have a dvi cabel and you should use that to plug into the dvi port on your graphics card,so dont use the adopter.:)

2. As Jen has said the psu -(powersupply unit) should be a bigger wattage, more power.Look at 750 - 1000 wattage to last you for future upgrades - should last you a few years worth of upgrades. Some good brand's of psu's are Enermax,CoolerMaster,Silverstone.
Get more then what you think you need now because when you get a new graphics card they all need more power then the old graphics cards did.

3. And get some cheap 2 x 1 gig ddr800 ram for gaming and sell your old ram to family/friend/trademe.

Ram is so cheap and it will make a big difference for your games.:D

4. Check out www.pricespy.co.nz (http://www.pricespy.co.nz) for computer parts and get some good prices to buy new stuff for your computer.

685740 2008-07-07 01:40:00 lol @750W PSU.

Kinda unneccesary. Tomshardware just did a test of one of their recent builds and found that a Q9750 (I think) Extreme, and 2xSLi 8800GTX machine had a peak wattage of 600W.

Their mid range build had a peak of 400W.

Graphics cards do get power hungry, but with chip processes going down constantly I can't see them getting that power hungry.

I'd suggest a cheap 500W from silverstone.

685741 2008-07-07 02:26:00 You can get a 750 watts psu cheap now so watts the problem?:banana

Plus it will last you for future upgrades for several years like I said in my other post.:clap

Quad SLI or Quad CrossfireX,SkullTrail,8 core cpu,2x dvdrw burners or 2 x Blue ray burners, more harddrives, etc.

Better to have more power for the future then just enough for now.:banana

Sure about that? Look whats on PSUs now, sata connectors, 8pin COU connectors, 6 and 8 pin PCI-e.

You going to predict there won't be anything new in a few years?

685743 2008-07-07 04:31:00 Does your monitor happen to be a 19" Viewsonic LCD? Jams (1051)
685744 2008-07-07 07:40:00 Thanks for your replys

I think its the grahpics card as the 7900gt has alot of problems(google it)
i put in a 300w psu(lol) with 19a, would this run the 8600gt?
(buying from ETC Computers). Is the 8600gt any good?
I most likely won't upgrade in the future
my lcd is HP vs17e

300w enough for:
amd athlon 3800+
1 gig ddr2 533mhz(may upgrade)
8600gt
1x 160gb sata hard drive
1 dvd drive
a sound card (not sure what brand/make/model)

Thanks :D
