Soo i had a couple of sony PSP's floating around the house, as you do.
and with these cold winter nights climbing into bed and watching movies on the PSP isnt a bad option.

Loading movies onto the memory stick or popping in a UMD is all well and good but its a pain converting them to the psp format and moving them via USB to the memory stick, and i have all this media on my server box. what to do

Downloaded Pimpstreamer (wasnt sure about linking so google is your friend) and installed it onto the nearby xp box and installed the client onto both PSP's

Told pimpstreamer where my media was stored and added it to windows startup etc etc and let it run.

Fired up the PSP and ran the client, it connected to the server machine and gave me a directory listing of the available media, i was able to select a movie and play it and sure enough there it was streaming away.

Went back to the server machine and had a look at what Pimpstreamer server was actually doing, it was on the fly transcoding the media file to suit the PSP.
which is pretty damn impressive

Now the second PSP wouldnt connect at all if one was already connected, so a quick hax was needed.

making a copy of the pimpstreamer server folder i renamed to pimpserver2 and edited the config file to change the port it was using on both the second server and the client PSP, and ran it, sure enough a second instance of pimpserver was now running and now both PSP's were playing their own movies off the same server drive and transcoding on the fly for both.

the server machine is nothing amazing but wasn't even bothered by two separate instances doing transcoding.

now both PSP's can watch media of pretty much any format as a stream in effect making them nice little mobile personal media devices, havent tried the same file on both yet. will post updates from my testing if anyones interested.

I used it in bed to watch movies too :punk

I now actually have a use for my PSP :)
