686901 2008-07-09 09:23:00 I have a directory of files put there by a Nokia phone I no longer have. The Uninstall has disappeared from my list so I would like to simply delete the files in that directory and clean up the registry afterwards. Problem is, I don't have permission to delete that directory. It tells me that User Account Control prevents me but even with that switched off, I can't delete that directory. Before I go mad, someone please tell me how to get rid of a directory I don't need/want under these circumstances. nickryan (13945)
686902 2008-07-09 22:06:00 Is this an installed program?
What do you mean by "uninstall has disappeared from my list"?
Do you have administrative rights?

686903 2008-07-09 22:39:00 Welcome to Press F1, if the program you want to uninstall has disappeared from the programs and features list, try this - get Ccleaner from my sig, install it, open and an the left select Tools / uninstall - locate the program you want out, then click Run Uninstaller. wainuitech (129)
686904 2008-07-10 05:14:00 If that doesn't work try revo (www.download.com) uninstaller Blam (54)
686905 2008-07-10 05:17:00 Also, try pressing the shift key while right clicking thefolder you want to delete, then click "Take Ownership" or try Unlocker (ccollomb.free.fr) Blam (54)

Yes, I have admin rights on this machine.

I ran uninstall on the Nokia Suite and it removed Version 7. Next time I started my machine, there was a copy of Nokia Suite started automatically! It turned out that Version 6 was left there when 7 was installed and it was in a runnable state. It had an uninstall icon but when I clicked that, it said the object it referred to had disappeared and that it was going to delete itself. I went to the usual Uninstall Programs option in Control Panel and there is no record of Nokia software in there.

I will try those other uninstall programs suggested by others (thanks) and see how I go.

But frankly it is stupid that as an Admin on my machine, I'm banned from doing anything I like. I wish I'd never downgraded to Vista!

Regards,
Nick

None of those uninstallers worked because they all seem to rely on some registry entry, perhaps, or just the presence of some file to tell the program that the application was installed. Didn't seem to be there, for whatever reason. I also tried the right-click idea but there was no option to "take ownership". What I ended up doing was on the right-click, I could select to move the folder and amazingly enough that worked so I put it on my desktop and from there I was allowed to delete it!

Crazy. Permissions gone mad. I've had so many other issues with Vista like my SQL Server 2005 and Reporting Services not working that I wish I'd never installed it. At least I kept my laptop XP so it runs the things I want.

686908 2008-07-15 09:36:00 Nick, I'm assuming you have tried uninstalling them with HijackThis?

In Configuration, Misc Tools, you can choose files you want to delete on start up.

p.s, if you're the Nick I think you are, do you still work in IT?

Yes, I do. I'm from Wainuiomata originally so am I the Nick you're thinking of? I spent a couple of years on the dark side (as a Business Analyst) but really didn't like leaving the real work to someone else so I'm back in a development role. Well, sort of. I'm building a reporting system in SQL Server and Reporting Services to replace an ad hoc bunch of Access and Excel reports.

So who am I talking to? The nickname doesn't ring a bell.
