686370 2008-07-08 02:06:00 Just assembled my new pc which consists of Gigabyte EP45-DS3R motherboard, E8400, Sapphire HD-4850, 2x 2GB Gskill ddr2 1000. I'm re-using asus sata dvd, 2 hd and enermax infiniti 650w psu.

I'm having major issues with ram on this board. For a start, if I leave everything set to auto in the bios, the ram runs at spd ddr2 800 and I can install and run vista no problems.

As soon as I attempt to alter the speed to match the ram specifications I get endless reboots until the bios clears itself. Reset bios back to auto and everything's fine again. This also happens if I leave the speed alone and adjust the timings. Have tried some corsair ddr2 800 and adjust the timings and the same thing happens. Also tried raising fsb by a small amount to see if I could raise the ram speed that way but same result. So no overclocking potential possible. Have tried every variation of bios setting to no effect.

Put in my old graphics card to eliminate that variable and it didn't have any effect.

Don't think the psu the problem, as even the ram timings seem to cause the problem.

Have I got a lemon board, your advice welcome.

686371 2008-07-08 04:14:00 Just trying to understand your problem.
It runs fine on default settings, but not when you overclock it?
Have you tryed it with just 2GB of memory?

686372 2008-07-08 04:56:00 Do you have any problems at stock speeds in Windows? I would say you have something wrong with the motherboard as the E8400 should have no problems overclocking and same goes for the RAM. trinsic (6945)
686373 2008-07-08 05:21:00 The memory's not overclocked. Its specified as ddr2 1000 @ 2.0-2.1v so all that is changed is the divider to get the right speed and adjust the voltage. All ddr2 800 or faster ram defaults to 800 @1.8v as that is the official jedec specification. For anything faster than 800, you have to manually set the speed.
Tried with one stick but i don't thinks its a memory issue, as i tried the corsair ram which i know works fine at the timings printed on the side of the stick.
From a post on another forum I tried raising cpu voltage and mch core. This worked but either I would get into windows and crash or I would blue screen on bootup. Voltages were only raised by one point in each.

686374 2008-07-08 05:27:00 Yes I've seen this combo go over 4GHz.
I haven't tried anything under load, so don't know it thats stable. Didn't want to install lots if I'm only having to pull it all to bits.
No use having faster ram if I can only run it at the slower speed, and i was intending to overclock once it was all installed and stable, though nothing to extreme.

686375 2008-07-08 22:30:00 Have you had a look on "motherboards.org" forums?
They all seem to be overclockers there.

686376 2008-07-09 00:01:00 Well, Gigabyte wont support you as the RAM is not on the Compatiblity List for that board....

Did you up the voltage for the RAM to get the setting you require....doesnt it have to be like 2v+ for DDR1066?

686377 2008-07-09 11:55:00 Got that standard reply from Gigabyte. If you went by that list there's not much to choose from.
Board doesn't seem to like any voltage change. It certainly didn't like the corsair ram which is actually on their list.
Have put in a rma request. Not sure what i should replace it with. The rev 1 p45 boards seem to be having some issues from what I've been reading in the last couple of days. My old gigabyte p965-DS3 (rev 1) which I got straight after core2duo was released has been rock solid, not a single problem.

686378 2008-07-09 22:00:00 I am running a E8400 on a EP35-DS3. Nice board & no problems.
Did you try using the overclocking software that comes with your board drivers?
Driftwood (5551)
686379 2008-07-10 10:09:00 Tried the easy tune software, it crashed upon reboot into windows.
The board's on its way to the retailer, so its in their hands now.
