426620 2006-02-02 21:03:00 My wife has just been offers a swapya deal from Telecom to get her off her old 025 number and onto 027. So far, so good - it has to happen sometime, so why not now. (BTW we just realized her current phone is least 10 years old - which may be some kind of record :)).

If she is going to change, this would seem like a good time to examine all the options, so my question is:

Are there any technical reasons why she should stay with Telecom or go with Vodaphone? (Let's take all the general Telecom-bashing as read, and concentrate on the technical stuff.) Her requirements are really simple - no txt, no pxt, no music, no video. Just calling and cellular secretary.

426621 2006-02-03 00:05:00 Looking at her requirements she may as well stay where she is. The only advantage I see with Vodafone's GSM system is that you get a SIM card that can be changed from phone to phone with out loosing her phone lists etc. Telecom's CDMA phones in this country don't have that option.. paulw (1826)
426622 2006-02-03 03:55:00 You could just put her on the motormouth plan or maybe a you choose plan. She doesn't call much does she? Ninjabear (2948)
426623 2006-02-03 03:58:00 Since she does not text or pxt then the you choose plan might be best for her.

You choose 20 with add on 100 and maybe addon 100 text. $20+$15+$6.

Im not sure if this is expensive but since you said she doesn't text or pxt and mainly call maybe this plan is good for her and if she does call alot and depending the time of the day she talks you can move the plan up a bit to suit her needs.

I checked telecom plans and they are slightly more expensive than vodafone except for the texting part.

426624 2006-02-03 04:59:00 Looking at her requirements she may as well stay where she is. That's pretty well what I thought. In reply to other posters, we were thinking one of the prepaid plans is probably the cheapest option. Tony (4941)
426625 2006-02-03 05:13:00 I swapped three old phones for three new nokias and recently bought a fourth. There doesn't seem to be anything cheaper than the Pre-Pay Mates Rates deal from Telecom. Calls are 39cpm and they have a $10 text deal that limits your texting costs to $10 per month (if I understand it correctly).

I couldn't find anything that suited our family usage any better, the phones can roam overseas and there are no surprises. Coverage is much better than 025 and I can carry the phone in my shirt pocket now instead of needing a wheelbarrow.

426626 2006-02-03 05:58:00 Have you tried taking your phones overseas? My friend took his phone to america that was supposed to be able to roam overseas, and it didn't work Greven (91)

Yes, I had two phones roaming in Australia in January. Did your friend get Telecom to set it up for roaming in the US, or did he just assume that it would work? In addition, if your phone is not compatible with the service where you want to roam, Telecom will loan you one of theirs free of charge, so I suspect that your friend was in the wishing and hoping bracket.

426628 2006-02-05 06:43:00 Telecom's CDMA phones in this country don't have that option. If you want a good phone - and when I say good I don't mean $500+, just an everyday phone - Vodafone is your only choice. Major brands manufacture very few CDMA phones and Telecom has made the same "lack of handsets" mistake again with their new 3G network in my opinion.

My recommendation would be a Sony Ericsson K700 (a good mid to low range phone - $349) or Sony Ericsson J200 (low end phone - $139) on a Vodafone motormouth plan. :)
