426472 2006-02-02 08:12:00 Simple poll. Do you support fluoridation of water supplies?
It would be interesting to hear reasons for your viewpoint.

This topic is currently in the news as Hamilton is reviewing the fluoridation of the city water supply.

There's a huge amount of literature on this topic. I could provide some links, but don't want to influence people's opinions prior to polling.

426474 2006-02-02 08:19:00 Yeah it's good. Speaking from one who's had abysmal dental care in my life, I'd have lost a lot more than the five teeth I'm already missing if I didn't have flouride. Greg (193)
426475 2006-02-02 08:22:00 Wangavegus is doing a similar thing.....but the wanganuis people are expected to vote on it? that should be fun...........

there are good points and bad points.... apparently overseas they are reducing it in the water supplies because of the detrimental long term effects on the peoples health....... where is that link....

cant recall where i read it...if i find it ill post it...:p

426476 2006-02-02 08:36:00 From a public health point of view, it is a good thing (dental health at least).

But it takes away your right to withhold medical treatment. After all, you can just treat your own water if you want to by throwing some pills in it.

I personally don't get too excited about it (I mean I drink diet coke after all - and god knows what that chemical mix does for you).

I think it is right the ratepayers decide...I wonder how much it costs to add. Probably not too much I guess as the levels they add are trace levels..

426477 2006-02-02 08:49:00 Its snakeoil, From what ive read on the subject area's where they have it don't have better teeth.

And the one-sided news report I watched had experts (must have been experts, they were sitting at desks that had computers on em) stressing that your body doesn't absorb teh crap and send it to our teeth....

And, I wouldn't let the local council run a used clothing stand, let alone decide to add chemicals to something that I have to have every freaking day. **** would hit the roof if I rocked on out and pour some crap into someones water tank because I figured it was good for em, Here have some sheep dip, works wonders down on the farm, No more headlice.

426478 2006-02-02 09:04:00 Certainly. Do you brush your teeth with toothpaste, Metla? This is because most toothpaste contain a certain amount of fluoride, which will prevent rapid teeth decay. So far, there are no long-term side effects. From what I know, any unwanted long-term side effects have not been discovered so far.

Cheers :)

426479 2006-02-02 09:19:00 We voted on this some time ago and the Onehunga / Royal Oak area came back with a slim vote of 'No'. So at the moment our tap water is technically spring water given it comes from a natural spring in (the aptly named) Spring Street. Why did I vote no? I'd rather have the choice. I don't want organisations deciding what is good or bad for me - end of story. If I had to vote again, I would vote no again for exactly the same reasons. Mind you there is a lot of misinformation (from both sides) especially where you have a group with a barrow to push so don't believe everything you read.

Just for the record,

The fluoride that is added to toothpaste (sodium monofluorophosphate) is not the same as the fluoride that is added to the water supply (hydrofluorosicilic acid).
Neither of these types of fluoride are natural sources of fluoride (which is usually calcium fluoride).
