426046 2006-02-01 07:14:00 Did a bit of research while at work....

I'm a heavy user, has a adsl modem already... Compared ISPs, and narrowed it down to 2 choices...

Actrix 1mbps/128kbps 700mb/day (~21gb/mth) = $55/mth.

OR

Worldnet 2mbps/128kbps 22gb/mth = $56/mth.

The worldnet stats look better, of course, for $1 more per month. But I've heard that rumors about it is that it's quite bad eh? So please, give me some opinion!

I use BT frequently, watch videos, and upload/download pictures quite alot. Not that much of a gamer.

426047 2006-02-01 07:30:00 A mate of mine moved from WorldNet to Actrix about 6 months ago due to very big problems with bandwidth at WorldNet.

He had no problems with Actrix, however he's upped and moved to Japan now and is on 50mbps/3mbps unlimited for $NZD70

It's a shame international bandwidth in NZ is at such a premium

That's exactly what Telecom want us to believe, so they can justify their slow, crappy, data-capped pathetic excuse for broadband.

I'm sure it's not as expensive as we are led to believe.
If Ihug can manage some decent data caps (and only counting downloaded data) on Telecom's network, then I'm sure Telecom can manage it too.

426049 2006-02-01 08:15:00 Is there a plan for unlimited national traffic? because you could do some serious downloading from nz dc hubs.... Prescott (11)
426050 2006-02-01 08:41:00 I'm sure it's not as expensive as we are led to believe.I work in the industry (not for Telecom or Telstra), and believe me, it is expensive.

What you have to think about is that the majority of the internet that people really care about is overseas. ~75% of all ISP traffic goes off shore, be it web-sites, torrents, whatever. The only thing really bringing that data in is the Southern Cross cable - and getting space on that is at a big premium.

That said there are only a few big carriers bringing international internet into the country over the SCC. Check out www.ispmap.co.nz to get an idea of just how the land lies.

ISP grade committed bandwidth borders on 4 figure sums per Mbps - a bit more expensive than your average 2Mbps Jetstream connection.

Is there a plan for unlimited national traffic? because you could do some serious downloading from nz dc hubs....Whilst national traffic is cheap, Telecom's caps for UBS are location irrelevant. For each UBS customer an ISP has, they get a 10GB allocation of data from Telecom that they'll haull from the exchange, to the ISP.

It's delivered as a lump and can be distributed disproportionately. An ISP with 3 UBS customers gets 30GB from Telecom, they could give 20GB to one customer and 5GB each to the other two - if the go over the 10GB average per person Telecom charges excess data.

iHug are just playing the numbers game - for each leecher doing 80GB, they gotta have 9 or 10 "ma and pa" users doing 1GB or so each so they contribute to the pool.

426052 2006-02-01 09:51:00 I'm on the Actrix 1mb plan. There service is first rate. Help desk availible from 8am to midnight 7 days a week. I was with World-Net about 4 years ago until they went down for the weekend. Couldn't get hold of anyone till Monday. I don't know what they are like now but it is run by Asians and they employ Asians on there help desk who have trouble understanding you and vice versa. Things might of improved by now.

426053 2006-02-01 10:05:00 I used to use 2mbps with worldnet it was great, not a problem. but back to 256k.Keep in mind that up until ~9 months ago the 2Mbps plans with all ISP's were still using Telecom's bandwidth so there was no quality differentiation between any of them.

Now they're using the ISP's own bandwidth on UBS, which is where you will get performance differences depending on how the ISP over-subcribes, shapes traffic etc.

426054 2006-02-02 08:48:00 I'm a pretty heavy BT user . Is there any form of "port shaping", or any kind of speed reduction on Worldnet?

Speedwise, Worldnet has the upper-hand when it comes to stats, since it advertises 2mbps over Actrix's 1mbps . But what is the reality???
