| 426660 | 2006-02-08 11:07:00 | I don't know what system the Japanese line of SE phones runs on, but it won't be the same as Telecom's CDMA network . The Japanese market is well ahead of other countries . Here is a quick summary for various manufacturers (note, many of the handsets are old but it would take too much time and be too opinion based if I was to remove the older handsets): Sony Ericsson: No CDMA phones Nokia: 10 CDMA phones / 23 GSM phones Samsung: A mixture, including a few phones that do both . Motorola: 7 CDMA phones / 30 GSM phones LG: Seem to be mostly GSM Siemens: Couldn't find any CDMA models when I quickly flicked through a few pages on their site . You also need to take into account quality you are getting for your dollar . Generally phones that work on Vodafone's network cost less and offer more . For the majority of people, the technical differences between the networks is minimal so their choice comes down to handsets . It depends, take a look at the pricing plans on the Vodafone and Telecom websites . Only you know how much you will use your phone and how you will be using it . As far as the hand sets go, even at the low end of the market I believe you can get much better parallel imported handsets for Vodafone's network than Telecom sells for its network . It all comes down to your usage and requirements, but I would go for Vodafone . :) jeez, what is it with people and their features . maccrazy, would you actually use a 2mp camera? i have a phone that does video and pxt, but i still have a digital camera for pictures . theres no point in paying more for something that is almost useless . what tony wants is a basic phone . the 2280 is perfect for you tony . trust me on this one . its built like a brick **** house . infact you can submerge it in water and it will keep going (as long as its dried out) . if you have it on mates rates, its often cheaper than any vodafone plan . oh and onto the topic of wcdma . wcdma or wideband cdma is based on the cdma technology, its not totally different . also, someone noted that they havent seen any smartphones on telecom yet, need i remind you of the harrier, the treo 650, the palm smartphone etc . on price, please, do point me to a vodafone gsm that is $79 that can txt, phone, has wap etc . nokia 2112 on telecom can . the cheapest gsm i can see is $129 . and dont quote parallel imported, keep it in perspective . also, someone else noted that they like having a sim card so that they dont have to be limited to one phone . i shall remind them . i am on my 7th 027 phone . i have not changed my number once . why? because to change it, all i do is ring telecom up and it is changed within a couple of hours . simple . and tell me, how many times would you change out a sim card? sim cards and gsm phones are one of the most easy to steal platforms around, stolen phone, remove the sim card, and re program the phone via a data cable . simple . telecom, ring them up and have the esn blocked, that way it cannot be used ever again . worthless . |

| 426661 | 2006-02-08 11:27:00 | If i go overseas Cdma is not compatible with any other places around the world maybe australia. I travel alot overseas and I don't like using cdma. I enjoy using symbian mobiles I certainly use a 2mpxel camera as of now I am using a Nokia N70 Im afraid CDma is an old technology and should be replaced by gsm soon enough. I even went to china and they were using GSM. I really dont enjoy using Cdma.Your stuck in NZ for the rest of your life if you used CDMA. I've been travelling around Hk and taking pictures with my mobile and will be showing my friends when I go back. Here people in Hk mostly buy top end models mobile as they believe its a standard for them. Everyone thinks differently. If i bring my mobile back to NZ for use someone might say to me its just showing off but if i showed it to my friends over here they'll mostly have another mobile similiar to mine. All mobiles which vodafone used are imported. Im not sure where telecom mobiles get their stock from but all i can say is cdma is coming to an end. There are actually mobiles that support WCDMA and GSM together. I'll be using a motormouth account plan next month beats any telecom plan. I just don't like the range of mobiles with telecom. I find alot of people in nz don't really care about the features of the mobile as long as they can use it for texting and calling however people think differently overseas. There are people over here like using PDA's.I see alot of people using Sony Ericsson W800i here so that they can here music and I see a few people here that have Nokia N70. GSM Network is far from over!!! Harrier and Treo are kinda ugly.Lol...i don't see many people using it here but the XDA o2 Atom is the famous one right now in HK |

Lol . . . i don't see many people using it here but the XDA o2 Atom is the famous one right now in HK wow, i didnt know that just australia and new zealand used cdma, . cdg . org/technology/product_pavilion/cdma2000_operators . asp" target="_blank">www . cdg . org when you say you use a 2mp camera, do you print the pictures off or do you show them to your friends? cdma is not old technlogy, infact its cutting edge, cdma 1x2000 ev do is one of the fastest mobile networks around . china uses cdma as repeated above, nz and australia are not the only countries to use cdma . my sanyo 7400 takes fantastic pictures, i show them to my friends also, but if i want proper pictures i use my sony w1, good ole 5 mega pixels . well, whats not high end about some of the telecom phones? nokia 6265? oh and sorry to burst your bubble, but the pdas such as the o2 xda's are generic, why? because the o2 xda IIs is the same as the harrier, just gsm, same with the palm treo 650, same thing, just gsm . telecom mobiles also support mp3 playback, so whats your point? at least have a foot to stand on if you are going to make wild accusations . Plus hong kong is a completely different place, need i remind you that they eat alot different foods to nzers, they have different needs, everyone is different . telecom get their stock from almost identical suppliers, samsung, nokia, sanyo, palm, lg etc . and most have policies that state that they are to promote cdma rather than gsm, like nokia, in expanding their cdma range, rather than reduce it . they are reducing their gsm range |

| 426665 | 2006-02-08 12:03:00 | There are currently two providers in China China Mobile and China Unicorn both uses GSM.The website says they are trialing and i doubt anybody will be using CDmA over there as most people are using GSm as GSm has a lot of mobiles You can say that we are different but you have to look at the entire world and what the world are using right now The Sony Ericsson W800 is capable of having heaps of memory and now Sony Ericsson is releasing a new M600. I just don't see CDMA mobiles catching up with GSM Mobile.XDA o2 Atom currently runs the new windows 5.0 version while Treo is palm.New and improve mobiles are coming up however CDMA is hardly releasing any new smartphones/pda. Nokia maybe increasing CDMA range but they didn't say that they are decreasing range of GSM Mobiles.Half the Globe uses GSM! I am happy with my mobile taking pictures very much and it has a bluetooth printing software built into it.I can just take it to my friend's place to print those pictures off The new CDMA maybe fast but we will just have to wait and see if it will overtake GSm Right now I don't believe the amount of GSM users around the globe Nokia will decrease making GSM mobiles because thats where most of their profit comes from |

Just because you come from overseas does not mean that everyone wants to go where you're from. I have yet to live overeseas and frankly I can see NO POINT whatsoever going anywhere else. If you make comment that imply that being STUCK here is a bad thing thing then I think next time I WILL vote for WINSTONE (Peters not the winstone that roams here) Oh yeah - Although I strongly believe all mobile phones transmit some form of radiation - many articles I have seen show that there is more risk (www.emraustralia.com.au) from GSM than CDMA. So maybe there is a natural selection reason as to why many people are on GSM - I hope that I am wrong. |

| 426669 | 2006-02-08 19:34:00 | The debate is over - for us anyway. My wife has signed up for the Telecom swapya deal and the Nokia 2280, and we expect a courier pak any day. This has been a most interesting and stimulating debate - I never thought my original post would provoke such discussion! |
