686649 2008-07-10 09:21:00 1 20 gb hdd, one cd drive and 1 dvd drive nzjab06 (101)
686650 2008-07-10 09:29:00 Ok and is the hdd on primary master. By itself??

And the cd and dvd on secondary master and slave??

Sometimes one of the above (or it could be a faulty ide cable), it can stop during post, if its having probs reading or recognising one of them.

I had a similar thing happen here with a hdd that was installed. It used to stop when I rebooted. And because this hdd was screwed, it wouldnt even go as far as the XP logo on the screen.

So, in the end I removed the hdd and chucked it in the bin. And its been fine ever since

So, I would try replacing the IDE cables for the hdd and cd/dvd (if you have spares)

Are any of the IDE cables 80 wire ? (blue connector on the mobo end)?

686651 2008-07-12 01:49:00 yep i think they both are. I alo asked a computer teh and they think it culd be a roblem with the capacitors on the mobo, any ways of testing this. nzjab06 (101)
686652 2008-07-12 01:51:00 You'll have to open the case and look at the mobo.

And see if any of the capacitors are bursting, or blown

686653 2008-07-12 01:53:00 Another thing, I tried another HDD with windows xp on it and it did exactly the same thing. nzjab06 (101)
686654 2008-07-12 01:54:00 what will that look like and are they the cylindrical black things with metal show at the top? nzjab06 (101)
686655 2008-07-12 02:45:00 Since it sounds like you dont know what youre doing, I would take it into a shop to get it fixed. Or replace the mobo, and get another.

Or open the case and clean it. If its full of dust.

These are capacitors (en.wikipedia.org)

I doubt it'll be a capacitor tho, since if it was supplying power, the system would be dead as. Till you replace it

686656 2008-07-14 03:53:00 I believe that it is not a hardware problem now. I was using a dvd form APC magazine that had some diagnostic tools and testers on it which you didnt need an os as they booted to the disk. This worked fine without any freezing. Also, an error message keeps apearing to the effect that "sorry for the inconvenience but windows has had to end a generic host win32 pocess". Any more help Speedy? nzjab06 (101)
686657 2008-07-15 02:17:00 I would reformat

Then make sure its up to date
