| 426492 | 2006-02-02 19:17:00 | I can only relate my experiences with water treatment. They started adding fluoride here in my town about 2 years ago and I noticed the foul taste straight away. Now im used to it I dont notice it, but still would prefer non-fluoride water. Same thing happened when I was living in Japan for several years. We drank straight bore water for first 3 years there, but then they had to start adding chemicals because local councel forced it upon us. Noticed that absolutley putrid taste immediatley. I know fluoride has it positive points, but I believe that tsraight bore water is usually best. It may have a few bugs and dirt in it, but that just makes your immune system stronger. |

Ha ha ha ha When i go to Auckland and drink the processed muck you poor peasants have to drink i feel so sorry for you :p BTW... i'm 43, i have lived in places with real water for the last 20 years.. and all my teeth are originals with only one removed because of decay. |

| 426494 | 2006-02-02 21:15:00 | So at the moment our tap water is technically spring water given it comes from a natural spring in (the aptly named) Spring Street. Lucky you, us in South Auckland get that terrible contaminated, doped up, piped up S*** from the Waikato River. DID WE GET A CHOICE???? HELL NO! It's been turned on and cannot be switched off :xmouth: |

With the immense number of variables it seems a bit of a stretch to argue that fluoride is, without question, the panacea for everyone. Similarly, the news the other night reported some research that showed eating too much red meat produced something that altered your DNA to increase the likelihood of bowel cancer. Now, aside from the matter of a lifetime of claims of cancer-causing products (red food dye at one point, then licorice, etc. etc) and the probability that too much of anything is bad for you, there are so many variables as to allow for questioning the validity of the whole experiment (though I confess I haven't looked into it myself - just working form a philosophical and epistemelogical stand). Then there's the irresponsible "leap" from "too much red meat can increase the likelihood of dna-altering chemicals leading to bowel cancer" to "too much red meat causes bowel-cancer". Few things in life are ever that simple. |

| 426496 | 2006-02-02 22:39:00 | I agree that flouride makes the water taste horrible, but I haven't had anything wrong with my teeth in all my 20 years. I have no idea if that is due to the flouride, or other factors. Some places pump so many chemicals through their water to make it fit for human consumption, a bit of flouride isn't going to make any difference. |

| 426497 | 2006-02-02 23:33:00 | Christchurch has one of the best drinking water supplies in the world and I am very keen for it to stay that way. That means no fluoridation. I don't want to be forced to consume certain chemicals just because it might be beneficial to part of the population. If people want fluoride then they can go buy some from the chemist like I did for the kidlets. And use fluoride toothpaste. |

Don't believe in mass medication. |

Perhaps you live in a place where the water has been polluted for you, and you are happy to except it? I don't - normally i'm in inner CHCH. Where i'm staying at the moment, in Oxford, the water is treated, it stinks of chlorine or fluorine, i notice it when i run the tap, and i refuse to drink it until its been sitting in the jug for a while, and i've boiled it. It could well be an urban myth, but i boil that water to encourage the contaminants to evaporate off. Sorry if that doesn't leave enough power spare for us to export to you North Islanders so you can run your spa pools :D |

| 426500 | 2006-02-03 05:00:00 | Wikipedia has it all: Link ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Fluoride_therapy" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) or Link ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Flouridation" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) Cheers :) Thanks for that link . Although there's plenty of information linking from that page that suggests fluoridation of the water supply is a health risk . Also, that the advantages to oral health are only gained from topical application, rather than ingestion through drinking water . Several countries around the world have actually banned fluoridation . Belgium has even banned the use of fluroide supplements ( . bbc . co . uk/1/hi/health/2161300 . stm" target="_blank">news . bbc . co . uk) . |

Funny - In 1966 the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) banned the sale of fluoride tablets to pregnant women, due to evidence that it caused birth deformities. In the same year, Hamilton began adding fluoride to its water supply. |
