Yep, I did see it & did try & take a photo of it!! According to the Auckland harbour festival print out/ flayer you got when you where down there it was a RNZAF P3 & it was doing a Fly Past…

But man it was LOAD!!! It so made us jump out of our skins!! (We where down near Kelly Tarltons) to watch the Tall ship race when it came over us!.

425362 2006-01-31 03:08:00 I think Billy T knows an Orion when he sees it and that was not what he saw.
The actual aircraft type I think has been established on a previous post.

425363 2006-01-31 03:20:00 I've actually got a pic of the NZ Hunter. I was out at Ardmore for a product launch back in 2004 and it came in to land. Alas I only had the kit lens on the 300D with me at the time so the pic looks like this:

Can't see the Hunter. yes, well, you 've got to zoom in a bit ....

Hunters were infamously used to bomb Allendes palace (with him in it) when Pinochet took over Chile

425365 2006-01-31 04:01:00 Haven't the Orions had an an expensive upgrade. Perhaps this is the "stealth" kit, which makes it look like an obsolete plane, with a very limited range. This would confuse the fishing boats stealing our fish. :D Graham L (2)

Yeah, just like that TV ad where the guy straps the silhouette of a bigger and flasher car onto his old bomb.

In this instance though, the RNZAF obviously strapped the silhouette of a much smaller and faster plane onto a P3 Orion just to confuse us into thinking we still had an obsolete single-seater strike force.
