687172 2008-07-10 01:54:00 A friend has just brought in this little laptop. It belonged to a Japanese student who stayed with her but had to return to Japan. The family have been involved in an earthquake and have no desire to have his old belongings returned. Just dump or get rid of etc.
I once managed to change a laptop running Chinese
into English. But this one has a password.
There is no reason to retain any content.
None of the original disks or manuals etc exist any longer.
I wondered if I could use the XP Operating System CD from my own HP laptop to get this little Vaio running again.
I need advice on this one.

687173 2008-07-10 03:47:00 Linux it.

Let the browser wars begin.

In all honesty, that's what I did when my laptop's operating system had a meltdown. I'd long since lost the CDs that came with it.

The language is fixed at the first boot with certain windows installs, so even if you get round the password it might not be changeable.

Your HP laptop probably came with an OEM license, so it's not supposed to be used on another laptop. It's probably possible though.

Well I decided that I am not yet old enough to stop doing stupid things so I used my HP disc to put XP on the critter .
It worked fine and I got everything up and runnuing in English . Of course many of the programs (ie Office etc) did not have icons on the desktop layout and there is much work to be done . But I had forgotten that XP needs to be registered or it stops working after 30 days . I told the lady that she must not register it because the OS is mine for the HP .
So it will stop working after 30 days . But then we have the certificate numbers for both my HP and this SONY . Perhaps the local microsoft can help . I don't know!
If not then LINUX seems a good way to go .
Still looking for more advice .

687175 2008-07-10 11:20:00 Well thats all you can do. Put yours on it, and activate it

Or you'll have to buy another cd, install it then activate it

Or if you have the key for that laptop use it

Or as stated download Linux and install it, its free.

Registration is optional, activation isnt

No way. I am the worlds worst salesman, don't know any Japanese students - don't speak their language and have still to make life even more difficult by trying to do what I set out to do. Besides breaking the password would be TOO difficult. The laptop has fully English keys so I presume was bought here.
Speedy.
Pleased to see you agree with the actions I am taking. I spoke with Microsoft who were very helpful. Apparently they have met this problem before and on their web site are programs I can use to change the registration numbers. I didn't know that. The very helpful technician wasn't sure of the programs name - not the sort of thing he is asked about normally - but was able to point me in the general direction. I was also surprised when he agreed that Linux was an alternative OS in this case. He finds many people are more than happy with it.
I will try and stay with MS though.
Anybody out there know the name of the program I am trying to find?

687178 2008-07-11 01:43:00 I think there is software around that would find the original key of your current install. Re-install with your CD in English and try using the original key.

If it is just a windows password then that is simple enough to fix, if it is a bios password then reset bios.

Also possibly it has a restore on a second partition, maybe it can be restored then changed to english.

If BIOS is in Japanese it might be difficult, maybe there is an english bios that can replace that also.

Ring SOny and see if you can get a Recovery CD set for it.

If not buy XP, install it and download all the necessary drivers etc.
