| 426126 | 2006-02-01 14:24:00 | Greetings All, I purchased one of these Dvd recorders from noel leemings thinking what a bargain only $500.00 Well just goes to show you get what you pay for. Problems ive had / random lockups / corrupted titles / random freezes requiring the unit to be unplugged from wall. Its being returned tomorrow , I was just curious to see if other people have had similar problems with this model? There seems to be two types of products these days ,cheap crap or expensive crap. :groan: |

| 426127 | 2006-02-01 18:41:00 | I have the exact same model. Purchases from Noel Leemings for $499. Its brilliant! No problems whatsoever. It has a Seagate HDD in it you know. Maybe yours was just a bad batch? |

| 426128 | 2006-02-01 21:53:00 | I've been considering buying this model since pctek's post about her purchase a fortnight ago. The only reason it hasn't happened is that I've had a rural-living stint since. Today I WAS going buying... So after reading onelateknight's post, I Googled for reviews. Several sites have only 1, but on amazon.com I found 17 from buyers, even though it's currently out of stock for them. It was a depressing read. Even allowing for the fact that people are more likely to make the effort to complain than praise, there was a consistency about the faults described (Freezes...had to be turned off at the wall frequently etc...) Apparently there is/was a firmware upgrade which helped some, but Phillips help (or lack thereof) also came in for criticism. Admittedly these problems may be old & since addressed by the manufacturer, but I'm definitely having 2nd thoughts now. Pctek - you have the expertise to deal with unexpected crashes. I don't. I'll be interested to know what onelateknight is told when returning it..? And meanwhile I think I'll keep my cash in my pocket. |

I have it hooked up to Sky via the standard connectors and to the TV via sVideo. If it makes a difference. Onelatenight only needs to request a replacememnt from Noel Leemings. And then see how he goes with the new one. As for Phillips, well he should't need to go back to them.I had a fun discussion with Noel Leemings group about potential RMA. They told me it had a 1 year warranty and I explained that under the consumer guarantees act that it is in fact longer which they admitted was true in the end. So I'm not worried. Seagate HDDs all have a 5 year warranty too so if that died it might be easier to RMA direct to Seagate. And the Amazon reviews - try some other review sites too, there were only 5 there and they all seem related to this firmware thing. Mine must have the new firmware in it. Causes its great. My picky electronics friend came over to check it out and was impressed with it. |

So the extended warranties really are useless, not just overpriced? You seem to know a bit about the consumer guarentees act. How far can it be streched to get a replacement after the warranty has expired? I'll never trust philips firmware updates again - the firmware update killed my player & when I contacted philips about it, they told me it was a known issue. I think it is a bit slack of them to leave a known buggy update up on their site as the latest update & not provide any warnings that it might kill particular models. |

It's very likely that Seagate sold the drives to Philips with a different warranty arrangement. Your warranty probably covers the complete unit not parts by themselves. |

| 426132 | 2006-02-02 03:39:00 | Everything you buy is covered under the Consumers Guarantee. The exact lifespan varies, whether it was a cheap brand, ie Warehouse stuff, what it is etc. But yes, extended warranties are a ripoff as Russell Brown points out every so often on the Breakfast show in the mornings on TV1. As for Seagate - I don't know. If it came to the point where the thing had a problem and its past any reasonable length of warranty time, then I'd pull it apart and have a look. And either give it a go or maybe swap it out myself. Or not. Probably by then there will be something else better for $499. |

| 426134 | 2006-02-02 03:55:00 | David Russell is the Consumer man; Russell Brown writes computer/technology columns for newspapers and The Listener, and appears on TV. :D Many things you buy are covered by the CGA. IF you buy for business use, you're not covered. If you buy by auction you are not covered. If you buy something which "fell off the back of a truck" you are covered by some laws, and your friends may visit you. If you go to a retailer and you buy for your own non-commercial use, you are covered. But if you buy professional services from a lawyer or accountant ... :( |

| 426135 | 2006-02-02 04:08:00 | My accountant (chartered) had paragraphs-long disclaimers, I suggested to him that the comforting feeling of paying him exhorbitent fees was not offset by the disconcerting thought that he may not be held accountable for his actions. The philips I have goes 'ok'... no breakdowns yet, however it is not what I'd call user friendly (unlike my accountant) and slow-as to do anything when you press buttons. Like having a 10x CD player if there was such a thing in the 'old days'. Can't say I'd ever buy a Philips again. |
