Around 10:30 to 11:00 this morning a small twin engined jet made several passes over the City and the North Shore. In profile it looked a little like a Canberra (twin jet with engines on each wing) but the tailplane appeared to be too high up the stabiliser fin for that aircraft. It was only a brief look at quite a distance so I could be mistaken on all details.

It finished with a very high-speed low-level run west to east over the city then headed south, presumably to Ardmore.

How they got permission for the run over the city I'll never know because if anything had gone wrong it would have made one hell of a mess!

Did anybody else see it and if so, were you able to identify what aircraft it was?

Cheers

425342 2006-01-30 00:27:00 It flew South over me this morning (I'm in Royal Oak). I didn't think much of it at the time except for the fact it was pretty low and it was possibly buzzing around yesterday too....

LOL DD Many years ago I was studying in London for a year and since most of my classes were late afternoon or evening, I got caught up with a hard-core Scrabble pool in my digs that played until the early hours of the morning. In fact, I didn't even see a morning for months and had a hell of a job getting back to normal hours when exam time came around. :(

Now my vices and addictions are much more serious (and enjoyable). :D

425345 2006-01-30 01:18:00 I did read that Jack Nickolaus (?) is in NZ for a few days checking out his new golf course in his private lear jet, maybe it was that?

Oops no, unless I'm mistaken lear jets have the engines up top on the tail plane!

425347 2006-01-30 02:33:00 It's the new vehicle for the parking wardens. They have to fly low to see the WOF and registration stickers. Graham L (2)

Yeah I've been on summer holiday from uni for nearly 3 months and havn't seen the morning in about that long. I'm trying to break the habit but its very, very hard.

425349 2006-01-30 02:59:00 Here are some pics of a Canberra, it's quite unmistakeable:

In its day it couldn't be intercepted during NATO exercises, it flew too high.

The Olympus engined Canberra characterised by stainless steel tailpipes, similar to those in these photos but longer, around 1953 or 54, held the worlds height record.

It was a long long way away from my viewing location Terry, and the only profile I got was from a climbing right-hand turn at probably 5 -7 km away. It did look like a Canberra though, and the biggest clue that wipes out commercial jets as an option was the noise level, it was definitely either "old technology" or military. Rolling thunder comes to mind, it made a mother of a noise.

Where are all the aircraft enthusiasts when you need them? It had me (and one of my neighbours) running outside to see what it was so there must have been a few other aircraft nuts moved to go take a look.
