| 688149 | 2008-07-12 05:23:00 | I have setup a network consisting of a Vista machine and a XP machine. All good until I tried to drop a file from vista to xp, I get "you need permission to perform this action". Now I am Admin on both pc's and I "own" the files and have full control permission on files. All firewalls have been disabled. I cannot access vista from xp pc, says I dont have permission. | 688152 | 2008-07-12 06:11:00 | Sharing Folders in Vista is a two step process. Go to the folder you want to share: Right click it, select properties, go to the sharing tab, click on the word "Share" In the blank Drop Down box, hit the arrow on the right, select Guest, Click ADD, In the box below will be guest, select it, ( it will say Reader) change it to " Co - Owner" Hit Share down the bottom, it will take a few seconds to share, then click DONE. SECOND PART: Back at the properties window, select " Advanced Sharing", put a tick in the box that says " Share this folder" - Click Permissions - by default there will be an entry called " Everyone" in the check boxes, place ticks in Full Control, Change , Read, click OK ( 3 times) XP As long as you are on the same work group will now have full access to that folder. |

| 688154 | 2008-07-12 06:59:00 | Thanks for all the responses, I have followed them all and here is where I am at - I came across a program called network magic a user on this forum used with success so I d/loaded it and now my xp machine can access vista and copy files but still getting "you need permission to perform this action" on vista when copying files to xp. | 688155 | 2008-07-12 07:02:00 | Are you using XP Pro ? if so you may need to enable file sharing 1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.) PS: Network magic is cheating:D No good if it all turns to custard. |

| 688157 | 2008-07-12 07:48:00 | Disable it, then reboot, re-enable see if that has any affect. Sometimes I have known network magic to actually cause sharing problems - hence the comment "Network magic is cheating". In the XP folders, right click the folder, under sharing and Security, is "Allow Network users to change my files" Ticked. What can happen is XP gets all upset/confuses and wont share folders correctly, some times the following works some times it doesn't. Open My Computer, Right click the C: drive, select "sharing and Security" - share the whole drive ( take note of the following) THEN share the other folders you want to share, once they are working, go back and unshare the C: drive ( security risk having it shared) That should leave all the other directories shared correctly. EDITED: Also in Vista you may need to disable User Account Control, and make sure the sharing permissions are set correctly under network discovery. Some people say you need a patch from MS - never used it yet and we have several XP pro's / & home / Vista all talking nicely. |
