688086 2008-07-12 03:44:00 Hi
After the few threads mentioning Avast as the best free antivirus, I restored my windows image (was getting slow anyway) and use Avast instead of Norton Antivirus.

Apparently Avast is supposed to be quite light weight, but it seems to do quite a lot in the background. My computer is quite old (Athlon 1800+, 1.5gb ram), so I'm quite keen to ditch the unnecessary stuff. What are the options you all do without?

688087 2008-07-12 03:55:00 Well, if you dont use Outlook, IM programs or P2P programs, you can disable / terminate the scanner

You dont need the web scanner and you dont need script blocking (If you use Pro, its not in Home)

688088 2008-07-12 05:02:00 Avast is one of the slimmest AVs I know of (beats all but Nod IMO) - are you sure something else is not to blame??

Have a look in Task Manager under the processes tab.
On my machine, all 5 of Avast's processes take about 65MB or memory with all features enabled. www.imagef1.net.nz (running XP)

I have 1GB of RAM and a 2.5GHZ Celeron in this machine (laptop).

688090 2008-07-12 07:16:00 On a pentium III, 700 odd mb processor, Avast with all its apps running hurt. :waughh: the_bogan (9949)

65mb for me constitutes bloat :p
I've disabled the p2p, IM and email shield and the totals are:
ashDisp 1236k
ashServ 16344k
ashWebSv 11356k
aswUpdSv 196k

29mb for antivirus....I guess thats the state of things now days then :(
